In my litfic, I like happy-ish endings. They’re not always neat and tidy, but generally they’re earned. The characters have to go through some things before getting there, though.

I disappeared Sue, a woman in ch1 of my current litfic WIP whose role was to bring homemade pecan squares to Bible study.
I wrote too many characters into that scene & my beta readers couldn’t follow. The others show up again in the story, but not her.

Broken promises are a major problem in their marriage, especially that one. It’s at the root of Micah’s frustration & unhappiness, & he’s kind of oblivious to her feelings. That’s why their personal tragedy, compounded by his unwillingness to prioritize her, leads to her walking out on him.

Steve promises to support the family financially if Micah quit grad school & they moved back to his hometown of Losanti. But in Losanti, he can’t keep a job & Micah’s forced to work at a local university, reminding her of what might’ve been.

Micah is fairly self-aware. Her relationship with Julian in Marristone she is very aware is temporary, and that she can’t avoid addressing her failing marriage to Steve. But she is sometimes slow to move on what she knows to be true.
