OK, shoot me down in flames, but I'm not a fan of jury trials. Take 12 people at random and 6 of them, statistically, will be in favour of the death penalty. I'd rather trust a panel of three legal experts to get it right based on evidence than a bunch of random.

I reckon the relationship between the UK and the US will start getting a bit better again sometime in early 2029.
Same goes for the relationship between US & Canada, US & Europe, US and Australia, US & Mexico...
Probably not US & Russia, though.

Is the UK sufficiently stress-tested against an authoritarian turn?
By Naomi Smith

Superb from Bridget Philipson on #Today. Can you imagine Tory ever talking like that? Can you imagine Reform ever taking on this issue?

Reform are really starting to drop some serious bollocks now. Do they really think the average Brit wants ICE thugs on the streets here after what's been going on in the US? There will be some knuckledraggers that support the idea, but not many. Hope Goodwin gets the kicking in G&D that he deserves.

So far, the only outright hostility from a teachers' union to Philipson's SEND overhaul plans has come from NASUWT, before they were published. NAHT & NEU (usually very militant) broadly positive, not to mention CDC. Gut reaction (ie: Labour plan so must be awful) not borne out by reasoned analysis.

Rupert Lowe is clearly a very dangerous individual who should not be in parliament. The death penalty was abolished because the British state executed individuals whom it transpired were innocent. Not least Timothy Evans, wrongly executed for the crimes committed by serial killer John Christie.

Fantastic chart, Luke - really good to see balance like this showing that there is good and bad in perceptions of government policy and performance. It's not quite so binary as some would have us believe.

How long are we going to hear about βlegitimate debates and concerns about immigration?β Itβs time we told the truth and deal with it. Net migration is low, we need more migrants, we are an ageing population. Highly skilled and low paid jobs are dependent on migrants. We need safe and legal routes.

Coming home from seeing the magnificent Stewart Lee (& the Man Wulf) at Ally Pally, there were many Gooners on the Victoria Line as you'd expect. What a miserable bunch - I was convinced they'd lost! Not one smile between the lot of 'em.

Right, I remember when we officially left the EU, it was the day before my 35th birthday, exactly six years ago and I assumed this was a vintage Express cover from 2020. No. This is today's. These cunts got EVERYTHING they want and they're STILL miserable because their insides are rotten.
