But more directly to your point here, this can make for horrible player experiences. Either they feel like things are too easy and lose the challenge OR they feel like every combat is a struggle and lose motivation.

It’s also why claiming 2024 is backwards compatible with 2014 makes things so hard for DMs. 2024 seems to accept the fewer encounter days?

This is @musicologist.bsky.social ‘s constant refrain in our Ask the D&D Professors episodes (twitch then YT) about 2024 rule changes + how they’ve understood “balancing” martial classes and spellcasters! The perceived gap is only there if you’re not running enough encounters per long rest

I was at PAX U over the weekend and saw this booth that had resources for all sorts of folks with disabilities (but also could and do apply to new players). Think stuff like easy to read visual aides, step by step instructions, walkthrough guides, etc.
