There was of course the FIFA Peace Prize! Probably just as well Venezuela haven't qualified for the World Cup in USA and don't expect a friendly match anytime soon. Trump hasn't gone as far as Bush who arrested the President of Panama in Panama for drugs trafficking and invaded the country to do so.
That was a good account to read on Christmas morning. There are so many myths that keep being peddled as truth so we have to keep on telling the real stories of those remarkable men who fought in the Great War.
Happy Christmas and thank you to those that I follow on Blue Sky for so many interesting posts and comments. A postcard to illustrate how different a family Christmas was during the Great War.
Seven Essex Regiment men listed here. Ptes Edward Maurice Clarke, Abraham Dale, Joseph William Hicks, Hugh Leonard Salmon, Arthur Tatum, William George Wright and L Cpl Herbert Peck are all remembered on the East Bergholt Memorial.
We tend to spend much of our time remembers heroes who have long gone but today we remember and welcome home a hero from the Paratroop Regiment who has left us recently having lost his life in Ukraine. RIP Lance Corporal George Hooley and our thoughts with your family at home and in the Regiment.
Essex seems to have attracted only one librarian - Bottom of the second row Pte 2649 Francis Matthew Glenn of the Territorial 7th Battalion Essex Regiment who died on 15 Nov 1915 in Gallipoli. No body was recovered so he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. #EssexRegiment
100 Years Ago ..... The 11th Battalion Essex Regiment Old Comrades held a reunion at the Lion and Lamb Hotel, Brentwood. A report is below.

Essex Home Guard Powers
During the war the men of the Home Guard had quite sweeping authority for arresting people and even for using your property without permission to create defensive strongpoints. A bullet point list of these powers is below
One of my frustrations in researching military history for people relates to Essex Home Guard in which thousands of men served. A few units have lots of photos & info but the vast majority almost nothing.Even Service records are brief. For background I am doing a few general posts to show their work
What a lovely church memorial!
11am 11th Day 11th Month.
We will remember them!
In July 1918 the Great War was drawing to a close
King George V suggested that on 4 August 1918 the Anniversary of the start of the War should be observed as a day of remembrance in the UK for it's fallen since 1914. This moved to Armistice Day in 1919 with services on Sunday for working men.
Ancestry have released a large tranche of Second World War service records including 525 that come up on general search relating to the Essex Regiment although there are probably more on name search. www.ancestry.co.uk/search/colle...
A joint statement has been issued on the closure of the Essex Regiment Museum wing at Chelmsford. I think I am even more concerned now about the collection being split uo. www.royalanglianregiment.com/wp-content/u...
Big news today - the Essex Regiment Wing & huge archives at Chelmsford Museum closes on 1 Jan and moves to the Royal Anglian Museum at Duxford. Not enough info yet to know whether to be happy or not but there is bound to be disruption to access over the next year www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Just home from a visit to the Somme. This time I was based at Peronne on the south west of the Somme. Among the places I visited was Maricourt where the British and French lines met on 1 July 1916. It made me realise what a long was it was from the Belgian coast to Maricourt with trenches all the way

The Gallipoli Association have a current appeal for funds to help preserve the battlefield history at Gallipoli. May be a great fit if your firm is looking for a different charity to support.
Please with the post this morning as I have managed to buy a copy of At Some Disputed Barricade - the story of the 9th Battalion, Essex Reg by Hugh Edwards which I have been hunting for several years.
