Day 2: We were so deep into our projects that we barely lifted our heads from our laptops! After Nick Souterβs keynote, the day was packed with intense project time and an energetic unconference! #BHDonostia2025

We just wrapped an excellent keynote from @nicksouter.bsky.social on reducing the carbon footprint of research computing. A powerful reminder that scientific progress and sustainability can β and should β go hand in hand! ππ‘ #BHDonostia2025 #sustainability #GreenScience
This afternoon @inesatalmeida.bsky.social delivered a powerful keynote on rewarding early-career researchers for reproducible, open practices. It deeply resonated with the community!
Grateful to InΓͺs for joining us despite being ill! : )
Big kudos to Stefan Dvoretskii for sending his pitch via video and joining us online while travelling!
Our project leaders presented an incredibly rich set of ideas today β from p-hacking metrics to denoising modules, carbon impact estimation tools, BIDSification with LLMs, and phase-based fMRI analysis. A fantastic preview of what this BHDonostia2025 will produce! β‘π§
Day 1 started with our first keynote by @urrestarazu.bsky.social, βWhen defaults return gibberish.β A deep dive into modelling categorical predictors in R, how defaults can mislead, and how careful choices lead to clearer, more transparent science.! A great start to #BHDonostia2025!
#BHDonostia2025 kicked off strong with a warm welcome by our chairs, Monika and Clementine! Time to build, learn and code together! :) Ready? Let's hack!

Join us at Brainhack Donostia 2025 and letβs make statistical modeling more intuitive, one contrast at a time!
#Brainhack #BHD2025 #BrainhackGlobal #neuroscience
π Whether youβre a frequentist, a Bayesian enthusiast, or just tired of puzzling over reference levels and interaction termsβthis session will give you fresh tools to make your models more transparent and your results easier to share.
Why does this matter? Because the way we encode our data changes how we interpret our modelsβand how we communicate results. Youβll learn how indexing offers a more intuitive solution, especially for complex models and Bayesian workflows where assigning priors to meaningful parameters is key.
Weβll explore three different ways to encode categorical variables in regression models:
β¨ Indicator coding (the classic default in R)
β¨ Sum coding (same distance, zero sumβbut tricky with many levels)
β¨ Indexing (a clearer alternative that estimates a mean for each level)
π Talk Announcement for BHD25
When defaults return gibberish. Exploring different approaches to fitting models with categorical predictors (in R) by @urrestarazu.bsky.social .
He will be sharing insights about how to better understand statistical models with categorical predictors at BHD25! ππ‘
π‘ Join us to:
π Work on neuroscience projects
π Explore coding, data & science communication
