How ‘day zero’ water shortages in Iran are fuelling protests Supply failures are dramatic example of way climate crisis threatens basic human needs – and with it political stability

Is anyone analysing the risks to water managment/supply as part of the attacks on Iran?

But their battery chemicals come from China, and probably most of the brands have batteries that comes from China too. Right?

If not from Korea also with high coal intensity on the electricity grid.

How large part of batteries from the Western brands are actually not made in Asia?

Will we also see the utilisation rates increase of coal power plants? Increased investments in domestic fossil gas production?

Do you think increased petrol prices will push the state to incentivise EVs further?

War in the Middle East with risk of global oil crisis.

Meanwhile in China BYD presents new battery tech making EV charging as fast as filling up gas.

Many of these stats was supposed to be reached only with solid-state batteries promised in 4-5 years. But now there they are.

Interesting reading from David Harvey about Marx, but I really wonder about the part saying Ingvar Kamprad being "lionized as a national folk hero" as Sweden was mourning his death.

Honestly I didn't even remember he was dead. Yes, there was lots of media attention the day he died, but no lions.

"A victory for life.” That was the triumphal message from Indigenous campaigners in the Brazilian Amazon this week after they staved off a threat to the Tapajós River by occupying a grain terminal operated by Cargill, the biggest privately owned company in the US

Drax to stop burning controversial Canadian wood within next year Yorkshire plant has been criticised for taking material from some of British Columbia’s most environmentally important forests

Part of the proclaimed "energy transition" is going back to burning old forests. The trick to just switch from coal to wood is deeply flawed. Drax owners making profits and giving out free promises.

A Green ‘Transition’? If Only It Were That Simple In ‘More and More and More,’ Jean-Baptiste Fressoz shows that the human history of energy is one of accumulation, not substitution.

I think the book is helpful but mostly the parts on symbiosis of materials (mentions whale oil briefly!). Lots of local facts, but mostly a global take. No focus on animals.

Tell me if you found it interesting! I might have an idea even.

Try this episode of Drilled!

Bathsheba did you read Fressoz latest book More & More & More?

I am curious of your perspectives on energy flows in Beringia in combination with his presentation about symbiosis of energies and materials. Do you find his decription valid/helpful in the Beringia context?

Floating cities of logs: can the ‘lungs of Africa’ survive its exploitation? The Congo River basin is one of the planet’s most biodiverse ecosystems. But it is also home to a growing population and relentless trade in timber and charcoal

"Vast barges, which hold hundreds of logs, motor downstream."

This story of charcoal from Congo it reminds me of JB Fressoz argument on symbiotic of energies. Without that motor the vast barges wouldn't be possible. Fossil fuels making wood cheaper.

Equinor pulling back CCS spending until market improves Norwegian company is a CCS pioneer but markets are developing slower than expected

Who could have seen this coming?

Carbon capture was never the plan, it was the comfort blanket: “Don’t worry, we’ll fix it later".

A story to delay real cuts while drilling rolls on.

When the industry feels powerful & secure, the fairy tale goes back on the shelf.
