I feel that for most free software projects the UX part is the most difficult and requires almost as much politics as it does UX expertise to get anywhere. So any project that doesn't make a conscious effort to avoid it inevitably ends up with a totally arcane and calcified UI, that 'works for me'.

Consoles are still very much a thing; game developers have simply gotten into the habit of stripping them out of the shipped version of the game.
