The laws of war are non-reciprocal.
Just because one party does not follow them, does not give the other party the right to break them. Even when labelled an “evacuation,” displacement must be temporary, and civilians must be able to return once hostilities end.

Violations of international law today are the basis for more violence and suffering tomorrow, including for those forced to flee. #Displacement is usually one of the most lasting legacies of conflict.

🇺🇦 With 3.7 million internally displaced people (#IDPs), #Ukraine remains among the countries with the highest number of IDPs, with many displaced more than once. At least 5.9 million more have sought refuge abroad. The human cost is immense.
#Nigeria: I joined my colleague Balakrishnan Rajagopal, Special Rapporteur on adequate housing, in urging Nigerian authorities to provide durable solutions for hundreds of displaced families after the demolition of informal settlements and violent evictions in waterfront areas of #Lagos.
#NowPublic ➡️ Last December, my colleagues B. Rajagopal, F. Albanese and I sent a communication to Israel on the destruction of housing and life-sustaining infrastructure in #Gaza. Thousands of internally displaced persons have no home to return to.

Junto a Shoko Noda (@undp.org), Ugochi Daniels (@iom.int) y Raouf Mazou (@unhcr.org), tuvimos diálogos muy productivos con autoridades y sociedad civil en el 1er día de la misión de alto nivel de Naciones Unidas en el país.
