Treating populists as more authentic because attacks on “the system” are popular has proven corrosive in democracies. It provides a sheen of respectability to demagogues like Trump and Farage. It’s a common thread in horseshoe politics, lubricating ideological slipperiness in people like RFK, Jr.
For most people, “frustration with the system” is not some deep insight; it is a criticism of governmental or private entities doing things they dislike. This criticism is often valid, but it is not a coherent ideology. Although the language seems common between groups, it is not a common cause.
