Please check out our new preprint! Using single cell analysis paired with HCR to visualize transcript localization we have identified cell and tissue-specific expression of various genes encoding tubulins, kifs, and dyneins during neural crest development!
Ummm... Excuse me, can I help you find something?
If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kΔkΔpΕ chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!
Our work on #hornwort #pyrenoids is finally out in @science.org! π We uncovered how hornworts pack their Rubisco into pyrenoids and successfully recreated them in Arabidopsis. A key step toward engineering more efficient photosynthesis in crops @btiscience.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
An odd little plantβthe hornwortβjust gave scientists a blueprint for how to make crops more efficient.
New paper out today in Science from BTI, Cornell & the University of Edinburgh. Here's why it matters: btiscience.org/explore-bti/...
This Brazilian frog might be the first pollinating amphibian known to science Nectar-loving tree frog likely moves pollen from flower to flower
Itβs the first time a frogβor any amphibianβhas been observed pollinating a plant, researchers reported in 2023.

Researchers in the US might be having feelings about writing grants atm-I know I am!
We still need to write them. In this Evolution Exchange, I again chat with Sam Scheiner, who summarizes how to write a competitive proposal.
His advice is gold, and helpful regardless of funder. Pls RT!

EMERGENCY, #oregon forest friends!
Three more weeks to comment. No public hearings scheduled.

I am very excited to share my simultaneous triple staining method for monocot roots. This method is not only faster but also utilizes a smaller volume of stain than traditional methods and minimizes mechanical tissue damage.

Alternative periodic system of chemical elements (source: Wikimedia)
This periodic table shows the origins(!) of chemical elements: The carbon in your bones was created under extreme conditions within dying stars. The iron in your blood comes from exploding stars & the gold in your teeth from neutron stars. We are literally made of star stuff. #science #sagan #stars

So, any other news yesterday?
Anything important?
In principle the main extent of explorable morphospace should saturate in reasonably short order if there isnβt a strong penalty for such random walks, at which point more incremental tweaking would take over, so is this approaching a textbook case of neutral evolution?
Apparently Amorphophallus can in fact spontaneously regen from leaf cuttings sensu web searches TIL: www.juniperlevelbotanicgarden.org/propagation-...
I have always wondered if these leaves which recruit more stem cell maintenance genes to build leaf morph complexity is purely a coincidence. Titan arum is my personal fav in this respect with its βIβm gonna grow an entire tree out of a single organβ energy. No idea of its leaves can regenerate tho
These non-abscission based compound leaf arums also do some super funny things with their leaf primordia during organ formation. Feel like I remember Claudia Henriquez was finding some unusual KN1 expression patterns (equivalent to dicot STM) in other Arums when we overlapped
New paper alert π Our organism-wide single-cell ATAC-seq atlas of mammalian aging is now out in @science.org, led by our fantastic graduate student Ziyu Lu from @rockefeller.edu!

Project update:
Tanya and I have been writing up the results of this project and we've realized that all of the knots in this class of patterns are at most 6 "tangle moves" from each other and at most three tangle moves from what we're calling the "great-great-granny knot" (see alt text).

How do blue whales stop themselves tipping over when they inflate their lower jaw to engulf krill? The upper jaw! The triangular shape of the upper jaw keeps them swimming forward, acting like the delta-shaped wings of a fighter jet
