A Red-headed Woodpecker perched on a fallen log along the nature trail. This particular Woodpecker chases away Red-bellied Woodpeckers and the much larger Pileated Woodpeckers from the bird's wintering territory. Red-headed Woodpeckers cache food, so this bird was likely protecting his/her food.

One of the male Red-winged Blackbirds in my backyard flying over the marsh. The rusty fringe to his feathers (seen here mostly on the back) will soon drop off as he changes from his non-breeding plumage into his breeding plumage.

panels of birchbark with embroidered images of strawberries and people gathering them

Some 19th-century Mi'gmaw embroidery, done on birchbark with moosehair. It depicts strawberries, and women dressed in their fancy ceremonial dress gathering strawberries (the fruit is medicine associated with women, renewal, and the heart).

I heard a Pileated Woodpecker hammering away but wasn't able to locate him at first. I spotted him when he leaned to the side; he was directly on the other side of the tree.

My recipe for my first #StainedGlassSunday contribution to BlueSky:

Begin with stained glass. Add sunlight, Lincoln Cathedral, and stir. Blend the material with the immaterial.

The @penguinrandomhouse.bsky.social version of "Ripples on the Cosmic Ocean" is out today! It includes an audiobook, which I recorded last December at a sound studio here in Washington, DC. Now you can read or listen to the book, even if you live outside of the US and Canada. #History 1/2

It is #BlackHistoryMonth. Isaac Willoughby (fl. 1760–1834) was an enslaved Black man who bought his freedom in about 1796. His petitions to the Nova Scotia government offer a glimpse of life as a freed Black person in the colonial Maritimes. www.biographi.ca/en/bio/willo... #BHM
