On thursday I was granted an honorary doctorate by the University of York, where I studied 20 years ago (and where I've taught for the past decade). It was lovely -- but I did not realise I would also get a fun photoshoot after the ceremony! Big thanks to Paul Shields for making us all look smart

12 June 1656 #OTD Alice Thornton's daughter Katherine was born at Hipswell Hall, where the family were then living. Katherine was one of the three of Thornton's nine children to survive childhood. She married Thomas Purchas and, after his death, Robert Danby and died in 1726. #EarlyModern ποΈ
