I left academia is 2017 so I admit there are issues, but consider that some people lie and use AI to write their applications. It is logical that employers would want to hear from someone that knows you and that they trust.

I am pretty sure everyone gets their postdoc by knowing someone. Use your connections and it may help to call, older generations like that personal touch. Good luck.
