Ok. Some clarity:
It's a site where you have to pretend to be an AI and either answer questions or draw things in response to human prompts. You get tokens for each AI response you generate
As a human, you can request text or an image

I hope this call reaches some ppl of color- I cannot pretend that white folks are the best mentors for this event.
But cis/het white women are the majority in scicomm, I have no right to call on minoritized professionals to take on additional labor, and events like this one deserve enough mentors.
Calling on my fellow white scicomm'ers to do some work here. How many times have you offered career advice to a friend of a friend who's interested in #SciComm? How many of those FoaF's have been privileged in some way?

There used to be an old sign by the path, warning passers-by of the local sleeping willow, which would trap the unwary with fatigue, engulf them while they slept, and release them a hundred years later.
There was a new sign:
"This sleeping willow is full."

Yes- it's the only reason I know it happened. It felt like someone taking their fingernail and trying to scratch a groove in my skin (which is kind of what was happening!). Not as bad a bee sting, but noticeable, and only bearable I assume because it was so small.

If I had a 1,000-person team I could hire for scicomm, they would not code. I'd LOVE to do micro-customized work
If I went back to marine biology and had the power of 1K extra people, they would not code. They would expand learning and impact

This works in reverse too. When I lived abroad with my kids, I:
1. was relieved/horrified to realize the full extent of the burden we carry in the US, recognized only as it lifted
2. didn't believe how healthcare worked there. We got a refund check from our insurance bc they made too much profit!

we were probably all up last night staring at the ceiling with our own version of the same thought running on endless loop, but mine looked something like this:
I hate these people to a degree that feels simultaneously corrosive to the soul, and also the only righteous response to this kind of evil
I've used this photo setup on ships and in labs, and the poster trick is useful for taking pictures through windows (on ships, in lookout towers, etc.). You can make a smaller version from black duct tape w a hole for your lens -> goes on your camera
Travels pretty well with a not bad price point
Black poster board/tablecloth w a battery powered reading light. You just need to control light sources: poster above prevents surface reflection, black tablecloth behind/below blocks background, light shining into the water sideways makes subject pop
All cheap supplies- experiment! Good luck!!
