Translating these letters from prison written by Arnon Nampa was challenging and difficult, and also joyful. There is a theory of struggle and transformation between and within the lines.

It will be a huge injustice if Pimsiri Petchnamrob is convicted for Lèse-majesté this week. Her speech did not insult the king of Thailand, she merely quoted the UN's special rapporteur that said 112 was being used as a tool of suppression. They didn't charge the UN rapporteur over it.

The Long Reach of the Strong Arm: Evolving Forms of Transnational Authoritarianism This open access book investigates how authoritarian states seek to repress opposition at home and also silence dissidents living abroad and in exile

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

Our founders, though deeply flawed, understood that democracy requires an informed citizenry and a government accountable to it people. That’s why the press is the only profession protected by the Constitution. It’s also why autocrats and oligarchs seek to control and destroy it.

If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.

Democracy dies in oligarchy.

Abolish ICE.

There’s no reforming it.

There’s no compromise.

There’s only one way to rein in ICE’s terror campaign. Abolish it.

This isn't about "training issues." The murderer who executed Renee Good has been with ICE for 10 years, and according to DHS, the murderer who executed Alex Pretti has been there for 8 years.

These aren't "new recruits," or officers that can be "retrained." ICE can't be reformed. Abolish ICE.

Lies and Lawlessness The Camps, the Executions, and the Future

We have to see the logic of the killings as well as the killings themselves. The horror is a truth in itself. But it is also a sign of a political logic, one known from the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century.
