What is the best strategy to win any contest?

Eliminate your opponents of course.

Recently, my friend @fernpizza.bsky.social showed how plasmids compete intracellularly (check out his paper published in Science today!). With @baym.lol, we now know they can fight.

CDC reports highest number of pediatric influenza-associated deaths since 2009-10 Pediatric influenza-associated deaths for the 2024-25 season were second-highest recorded since becoming notifiable in 2004.

🚨 ALERT: After the 2nd deadliest pediatric flu season in 20 years with 280 child deaths mostly unvaccinated, next year’s flu could be even worse without urgent action. Is the US ready for another pediatric flu crisis? Vaccines save lives

Our work involved comparative genomics of neglected pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei. This is my first paper in bacterial genomics, with focus on variant analysis and orthologous protein clusters. Glad to be a part of the team..

Comparative pangenome analysis of major pneumococcal genotypes from India Background Pneumococcal genomes are highly dynamic with varying core genome sizes. The genotype classification system, Global Pneumococcal Sequence Clusters, identified patterns within genotype and an...

Comparative pangenomes of key pneumococcal genotypes reveal distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in the core genomes.
In this preprint, I analysed >600 genomes collected from India and created pangenomes for each major pneumococcal genotype. #pangenomes #bacteria

Scientific method: Statistical errors - Nature P values, the 'gold standard' of statistical validity, are not as reliable as many scientists assume.

The fallacy of p values..a significant part of our research uses p value..but with very little knowledge of how to interpret it

While pangenomes are a good way to go..don't we increase too much data for a supposed "reference" genome? I would rather work with best draft genome (based on ancestry) and try to identify snps from 100k databases..thoughts??

UK Biobank study, which has performed serial cognitive testing/brain MRI predating pandemic, examined ~800 people w/ & w/o #COVID19: those who’d been infected had more brain shrinkage & cognitive decline. Still true even after excluding those hospitalized.
