Taras Shevchenko, Ukrainian poet and national hero Shevchenko’s enduring presence across Ukraine underscores that at the heart of modern Ukrainian identity lies a poet.

The 19th-century poet and artist Taras Shevchenko was born on March 9, 1814.

His life is defined by his long struggle against injustice. Born a serf and only freed at almost 30 years of age, he faced arrest and exile for his works of art that have shaped the modern Ukrainian identity.

I cannot recommend enough this paper by @benrosher.bsky.social published in @politicalgeography.bsky.social a few days ago to anyone interested in borders. Such a careful and nuanced analysis of the EU settlement scheme and accountability for the effects of state border regimes.

Was in Helsinki for a few months in 2019. My family came out for a few weeks in August. They really liked it. Taking the ferry out to Suomenlinna fortress was fun. Good zoo and aquarium and very safe walking and cycling city. Nice beaches for swimming (eg Hietaranta) and we went to Porvoo too.

On 2 Oct 1990, Ukrainian students launched Revolution on Granite on Kyiv Maidan, pitching tents & going on hunger strike.

They rejected the Union Treaty with Moscow & party property nationalization.

The Maidan protest tradition was born, followed by Orange Revolution 2004 & Euromaidan 2013-14.
