So excited to share this new paper, out in JEP:G with the incredible @jamieamemiya.bsky.social, Gail Heyman, and @carenwalker.bsky.social! We tested how children and adults reason about disparate impact policies: formally neutral laws or rules that are indirectly discriminatory. (1/7)

(5/5) Big thanks to co-authors Kathryn Fox,Yuri-Grace B. Ohashi, Ann Haynos, Patrick Mair, and @shirleybwang.bsky.social for shaping this work!!

(4/5) This indicates, if someone self-harms for one reason, they likely engage in restrictive eating, binge eating, and/or purging for the same reasons. If we target the function behind one behavior, we may reduce others simultaneously.

(3/5) Using multidimensional scaling + hierarchical clustering, we mapped how functions cluster across behaviors.
We identified two functional clusters across behaviors:
πŸ”΄Social functions grouped tightly across all behaviors
πŸ”΅ Automatic functions grouped across most behaviors

(2/5) NSSI, restrictive eating, binging, and purging often co-occur. We examined adolescents’ use of these behaviors for four functions:
Automatic Positive-to feel good
Automatic Negative-to reduce distress
Social Positive-to get support
Social Negative-avoid social demands

New preprint alert! (1/5)🌟

I’m thrilled to share the preprint of my first first-authored PhD paper! We test whether shared reinforcement functions help explain why adolescents who engage in one self-destructive behavior often engage in others.

What a week! After 5 days, the #mitnb workshop has come to an end. We had a keynote on time scales and two workshops on careless responding and reliability. The central part of the workshops were the hackathons. We had super diverse hackathons, all designed to assess measurement in #ESM. (1/4)
