Ending the summer semester BBE Seminar with two thought-provoking talks:
1 โ Steffen Altmann (@steffenaltmann.bsky.social) fromย University of Wรผrzburg (@uni-wuerzburg.de) on "Wage Expectations and Job Search".
Our NSF grant on "Source Credibility, Political Identity, and Factual Belief Revision" with Jonathan Woon was also just cancelled because it is no longer "in alignment with current NSF priorities". This is sad and frustrating!
Individuals sometimes make choices that harm their welfare due to incomplete or misleading information. This column presents findings from a large-scale experiment in the US that demonstrates how Americans prefer such situations to be addressed. Many support โsoft interventionsโ, such as providing information to guide better decisions, while there is significant resistance to โhard interventionsโ that restrict freedom of choice. Soft interventions receive support both from welfarists who respect the preferences of the stakeholder and from libertarian paternalists who want to preserve peopleโs freedom to choose.
Americans prefer information to guide better decisions as opposed to restrictions of their freedom of choice when individuals harm their own welfare due to incomplete or misleading information.
