A blue, Mylar-covered book jacket loosely surrounds a firmly-packed, grapefruit-sized lump of paper with printing on it.

Never seen what happens to a hardcover library book when it's put through the washer? Let me help you with that...

(I told the patron I could absolutely have managed to do this and we laughed and laughed)

I never run my students' papers through AI checkers because it tends to flag the "autistic cadence" as AI for some reason. It's only gotten worse 🫠

That U.S. academics didn't collectively develop strong labor consciousness is really going to bite them in the ass as universities bend the knee to this administration. Politely worded letters to presidents and trustees are not going to count for much of anything.

Plainly, the people mad about the work required to write well and make great art who are justifying various artificial intelligence tools as shortcuts to that creative process don't value the labor inherent to it.

In some ways actors for the new stuff acknowledging the transphobia they are standing with is worse than if they just stay silent or even overtly support it. β€œYes i know i am collaborating with the worlds no.1 transphobe destroying trans rights, HOWEVERβ€œ

Good summary. Also, given that we have killing, persistent heat afflicting half this country and people have budgets, AI is at this moment almost certainly causing deaths for people who can no longer afford to cool their homes.

It takes a special kind of privilege to be upset about missing a beach trip because heaven forbid you have to try to keep people from dying because their benefits and Medicaid have been gutted.

My grandparents owned 2.5 acres in SoCal that was covered in veggies, berries, and fruit/nut trees (pecan, avocado, stone fruits, fig, and others) and they still were nothing like self-sustainable. People have no idea how tiny a 1-acre homestead would be.

Chewing. I want to kill people who are chewing and I know it's awful but I just can't help the sheer rage.

Until the battery died, I had to bury my analog watch in my underwear drawer muffled by clothing in order to sleep.

"Liberate this city from socialists and burdensome leadership." If that's not regime change, I don't know what to tell you.

The inflection point is now.

Texas bill could punish bookstores for 'obscene' books A new bill in the Texas Legislature, authored by Rep. Nate Schatzline, would allow businesses to be held liable if a minor reports damages from "obscene" books.

It was never just about schools, it was never just about libraries, and it isn't actually about the books.

It's about finding a way to banish entire people, entire ideas, out of society, back into the closet or worse.

AP wins reinstatement to White House events after judge rules government can’t bar its journalists A federal judge has ordered the White House to restore The Associated Press’ full access to cover presidential events.

I happen to know that some powerful media orgs were unhappy that AP filed suit; they thought the conflict with the White House would blow over on its own and that AP risked making bad law. The AP's leadership deserves a lot of credit for having proceeded as it did. apnews.com/article/trum...

Nobody knew how bad this would be, except for the many people whose warnings I dismissed, but they don’t count.

Actually a good distillation of the mindset. Having already unpersoned everyone who understood what was happening, there’s no need to reconsider the belief in one’s inherent superiority.

The pandemic conditioned people to see the disabled as acceptable losses

Once you sacrifice an entire group of people, it gets easier for fascism to take hold.

The Spanish flu gave way to Nazis, where the disabled were the first people killed.

Want to fight fascism? Engage in disability justice

So as someone who is 1/2 French, I NEVER want to hear shit from Americans again about the cowardice of the French during WW2. Say what you want about the traitorous Vichy French, they had literal Panzer units bearing down on them. NYU is afraid of what? Getting their research grant revoked? JFC.

β€˜Climate of fear’: Montreal doctor says NYU cancelled her presentation A Montreal doctor says her presentation at NYU was abruptly cancelled and believes the university did so out of fear of being pressured by the Donald Trump administration.

NYU canceled a planned speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she planned to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and cuts to US AID.

This is what actual campus censorship looks like.
