Fiber-Sensing Technology Can Provide Early Warning for Volcanic Eruptions Early warnings before volcanic eruptions in Iceland

The Reykjanes Peninsula at Iceland's southwestern edge is the country's most volcanically active. In 2024, sensing technology developed at Caltech was deployed in the region to study the motion of subsurface magma & its eruption into lava on the surface.

I don't know if there are any other co-authors on here, but I'd certainly like to thank @atterholt.bsky.social, who was an invaluable collaborator and mentor throughout my first couple years at Caltech. The analysis in this work was largely informed by long conversations with him. Thanks, Jimmy!

Constraining Dike Opening Models With Seismic Velocity Changes Associated With the 2023โ€“2024 Eruption Sequence on the Reykjanes Peninsula Subsurface deformation associated with the 2023โ€“2024 eruption sequence on the Reykjanes Peninsula produces a pronounced dv/v signal The observed dv/v signal is inverted for a model of dike-openin...

New paper in AGU Advances! We constrained models of dike opening in the recent Icelandic eruptions through observations of dv/v on DAS.

Thank you to the many co-authors who made it possible, especially my advisor Zhongwen Zhan.
