To litigate “is it a war crime” — you actually need a lot more information than is so far public.

I can however tell you this was a shitty, unethical thing to order.

A whole lot of this conversation revolves around conflating legality with ethical principles, imo.

The legality of the sinking is probably less questionable, and the “unarmed” thing is doing a ton of lifting (did the commander of the sub know that? Etc) than straightforward ethic question.

Please do not mistake this for me saying war crimes are good and cool. They’re not, and morality more than legality should bind us to them.

But also, “rules of war” are inherently a kind of fake thing — they exist essentially as compact among combatants and to the extent they matter, it is victors justice.
