A fellow anti-blorber, procrastinators (I mean, improvisers) of the world unite!
OK! I do 12 damage. Your PC had six HP. How do you feel?
(In other words, character death remains an unsolved problem in the design of many games).
New month, new newsletter. Talking about why I didn't blog this month haha
Also including a ton of links to posts I found interesting!

Sometimes when I am in Aldi I play a game where I try to get out of there without a bag or box, buying the right foods and balancing all the food on one package. Aldi’s Razors are hard to balance though.
If you ask someone how Into the Odd has streamlined their games, they will probably mention removing the "to hit" roll and just rolling damage.
I blasphemously ask the question: can we re-incorporate accuracy and missed attacks with Into the Odd without turning it into a major slog?

I like this one! The charms hiding the dungeons is a nice touch. I am going to link to it in my Ecology of Fear post (part 1), collecting different ways people answer this question. Super neat
Naw clearly Blades on the Bark is BitD when you play a buncha stray dogs out to hold your territory against the Cat and Raccoon gangs! 😂
The small ones among us are may be overlooked, but they surely have grand tales to tell! Let's explore these tiny epics in the #ttrpg Blog Carnival. Smol mouse & a needle sword? A Shadow of the Colossus boss fight? Share your creations early! Final roundup on March 31

A short and very busy month on the road means this month's Explorateur is light. I mean, it's still a mace to face with design links, but it's not the usual two-hander.
I'm doing this new thing with the intro where I share three design/creative/craft ideas.

Down the path of fear, foreshadowing danger in adventure games: dreamshrike.blogspot.com/2026/02/land...
I think this is a good post, but I disagree with the conclusion. While writing poetically is all well and good, tags are a great way to convey information quickly, just do it diegetically.

Microblog time! Why not speed your investment in a character by putting yourself on the line to buy snacks for the table if they bite the dust?

The Bloggies have concluded for 2026! Congratulations to this year's winners. You can find the results (and a whole slew of awesome blog posts) here:

The accomplishment of "We Read the Bloggies" is incredible. In just a few weeks they produces nearly the same number of episodes as Blogs on Tape has in almost 9 years. Bravo to everyone involved, that's incredible.
I know, I know, I keep talking about the Bloggies.
But I built an archive of all the past Bloggies Awards. If that's your kind of thing, take a look!
You can also grab yearly OPML files of all nominees for your RSS reader.

Disappeared for two months now I'm back with a post over at Save vs. Worm: FISH-EATERS! a character background and some worldbuildy stuff for my late antique Iranian D&D setting. #OSR savevsworm.blogspot.com/2026/02/fish...
Catch ‘Em All while you can! In commemoration of the 30th anniversary, I’m heistfunding a Poképocalyptic game based on Into the Odd. I call it INTO THE ODDISH!

It's been a couple years since Reach of the Roach God was published, and I'm still thinking about how it pulled off stat blocks without stats.
It's a load-bearing piece of tech that's criminally underused.

In an effort to bribe you into voting for me, I have once again broken my record for longest post.
Enjoy my review of Daggerheart.
It's full of statements that are approximately true.

Monday’s #Shadowdark Shadowfeats Feat for #ZiMo:
78- Special Rites [Priest]: Take 1 turn to bless a corpse, it cannot return as evil undead. You may also make a WIS check (DC 12) to beseech a humanoid corpse for aid, raising it as a friendly zombie in six hours. Zombies last for one day.
Oh, you thought The Bloggies were over? The Bloggies haven't ended. They might never end.

a one page spread called ENTER THE DUNGEON It has a retro blue and off white color scheme, the different sections of the spread are divided by little dungeon corridors, in the style of old d&d map paper.
Some Dungeon procedures for a theater of the mind point crawl for #daggerheart .
The other day @thisisvictor.bsky.social had a great idea of using wandering monsters as the tension mechanism (in lieu of a more traditional "dungeon turn"). So stole that idea outright and made this!
#Jennell #Jacquays, trailblazing #trans woman, #TTRPG designer & artist, is a legend. This article provides a deep analysis of her first big adventure module, Caverns of Thracia, proving that she is the first truly great adventure designer, and arguably the GOAT.

This week I talk about getting players to care about failure in RPGs, and solve the major problems with all traditional and OSR role playing games. And cure cancer.
