OK! I do 12 damage. Your PC had six HP. How do you feel?

(In other words, character death remains an unsolved problem in the design of many games).

Sometimes when I am in Aldi I play a game where I try to get out of there without a bag or box, buying the right foods and balancing all the food on one package. Aldi’s Razors are hard to balance though.

I'm Bringing Accuracy Back — Prismatic Wasteland Into the Odd famously jettisoned the “roll to hit” aspect of D&D derived combat. How can accuracy, specifically reducing an opponent’s accuracy by means of sand in the eyes or otherwise, be re-introdu...

If you ask someone how Into the Odd has streamlined their games, they will probably mention removing the "to hit" roll and just rolling damage.

I blasphemously ask the question: can we re-incorporate accuracy and missed attacks with Into the Odd without turning it into a major slog?

I like this one! The charms hiding the dungeons is a nice touch. I am going to link to it in my Ecology of Fear post (part 1), collecting different ways people answer this question. Super neat

The Explorateur: Issue #17 Monthly design jams, critique, theory, and inspiration for tabletop rpg designers by rpg designers. Vetted. Looted. Curated.

A short and very busy month on the road means this month's Explorateur is light. I mean, it's still a mace to face with design links, but it's not the usual two-hander.

I'm doing this new thing with the intro where I share three design/creative/craft ideas.

I think this is a good post, but I disagree with the conclusion. While writing poetically is all well and good, tags are a great way to convey information quickly, just do it diegetically.

The accomplishment of "We Read the Bloggies" is incredible. In just a few weeks they produces nearly the same number of episodes as Blogs on Tape has in almost 9 years. Bravo to everyone involved, that's incredible.

Designing Lore Blocks An alternative to stat blocks designed for The 1 HP Dragon.

It's been a couple years since Reach of the Roach God was published, and I'm still thinking about how it pulled off stat blocks without stats.

It's a load-bearing piece of tech that's criminally underused.

a one page spread called ENTER THE DUNGEON
It has a retro blue and off white color scheme, the different sections of the spread are divided by little dungeon corridors, in the style of old d&d map paper.

Some Dungeon procedures for a theater of the mind point crawl for #daggerheart .

The other day @thisisvictor.bsky.social had a great idea of using wandering monsters as the tension mechanism (in lieu of a more traditional "dungeon turn"). So stole that idea outright and made this!
