Thank you for your work β both in the classroom and in the future. I admire you.
I think what you just showed me with this is how to use other poetβs definitions or explanations of poetic terms and how they might bring new insight for readers. Your example with Mary Oliver here is poweful. Do you use that often? I have never thought about including it before.
#Edusky & #grammar experts: We are debating the use of mentor sentences in grammar instruction, & I'm wondering what the appeal of using mentor sentences is, as well as how they differ in terms of students' understanding compared to the "drill & kill" approach. Any research to support ideas, please!
Great idea. Thank you!
Thatβs a good question. Weβre noticing a decline in grammar knowledge, so weβd like to bring in a skills workbook instead of Ixl or other online sites. We are working on it as a school, so itβs probably more of plugging holes at the moment.
Nothing!
We are familiar with Patterns of power and loved the premise of it. I think there are teachers who wanted a student guide that went along with it so students could practice skills. Iβll check out Good Grammar. Thank you for these suggestions!!
Looking for a #grammar resource for 8th grade students. Anyone have a workbook or other guide they love?

I'm looking for AI continuums that schools use in K-12 teaching assignments. Must be user-friendly and guide middle school students as to what's allowed in terms of AI usage on an assigned task. Can anyone point me in the right direction? #AI #EduSkyAI, #AIinEducation, #EdTech, #AITutors #EduSky
#Edusky: What's the most beautiful book you've taught to students in the last three years?
Hoping to do a humans of NY- style project for graduating 8th graders. Iβm curious about different ways to post pictures. Anyone done something like this? Willing to share displays? #edusky
While we teach novels, we wonder if this is just because weβve always taught novels and not because itβs best for students. I see both sides of this argument and wonder about impact of
Digital literacy (websites/apps) and how it alters our ability to patiently encounter a text. Thoughts?
#English #teachers: do you think the methods used to #teach and practice #literacy in schools are outdated? Specifically, should Ts modify curriculum to better sync with decreasing attention spans & reading outside of school? Or, do Ss need longer texts to help build fluency and comprehension?
Middle school #ELA teachers: looking for notebook hacks/tips you use in class. Do you use paper? Digital? Use them to reflect?
Tricks for getting students to stay in one section and in order? :) I'm hoping to be more intentional about helping students take notes this semester. #literacy #edusky
I know these emails. Haha
Whoa. Thatβs crazy β but, yay to digital! π
I think the last time Iβve filled out a timesheet was about 24 years ago. You have to do this for school?
This might be somewhat of a stretch depending on what you need, but in the Book Thief, the narrator writes about Liesel:
βWhen she came to write her story, she would wonder when the books and the words started to mean not just something, but everything.β
β Markus Zusak, The Book Thief
I love the response, "Something you never want to stop reading." β€οΈ
Awesome. Thank you!
I love this β especially the last line. Thank you!
A former student asked me to describe what I think good writing is so he can use it to compare & contrast my definition to his in a current reflective essay. It's such an interesting question and so much can be included.
So, #teachers, what do you think? What makes good writing? #literacy #ela
This is a great one, and I wasn't familiar with it before. Thanks for sharing!
The second class finished it, and it's the most lively and engaged students have been. I'm introducing text analysis next, and this feels like the perfect first step. Students will have some practice in choosing something and coming up with reasons for their list title. I hope it goes well for you!
This first-day-back assignment encouraged students to talk and write. At no time did I hear, "I don't have anything to write about." I have already learned so much about students' interests, and I'm excited for their final lists on Friday. Check it out here: www.nytimes.com/2025/01/07/l...
Cool!
This is great. Did they come up with the sentences, or did they annotate sentences you gave?
