Happy to share our new paper led by Corinna Breusing about how the Hunga volcanic eruption's decimation of nearby hydrothermal vent snails and mussels led to a significant reduction in the genomic diversity of their bacterial symbionts.

And Iβd just like to end with a huge huge thank you to Kaustuv Roy at UCSD who took me into the lab as a starry eyed freshman and, along with Alex Neu, turned me into a molecular biologist and set me on my path of studying marine symbioses!!!

Finally, although California spiny lobster populations appear outwardly healthy, we found quite a few amplicons assigned to groups with well known lobster pathogens. Although this isnβt specifically cause for alarm, we do think itβs worth examining in more detail.

For this paper, we collected lobsters from San Diego Co., and examined the microbes associated with internal and external tissues using a 16s Amplicon approach. As you might expect, we found that each tissue hosted a diverse but distinct suite of microbial taxa!

First got started on this baby Pre COVID, and it finally made it over the hump! The external and internal microbiomes of lobster species are well known to influence host health and functioning, but surprisingly, the microbiome of the California spiny lobster has (until now!) remained unexplored.

Wishing a very merry #ThalassiaThursday to all those who celebrate. As the first snow of the season hits Boston, Iβm looking forward to some upcoming trips down to the Caribbean this winter to collect symbiotic lucinid clams!

The morphology and movement of Uncus is consistent with modern day Nematoida, and demonstrates a striking depth of relief, consistent with a rigid outer membrane

Here, we describe Uncus dzaugisi from the Ediacaran of South Australia. This vermiform, non-modular bilaterian was curved to sinuous in shape, and moved through the microbial mat with a distinct sinusoidal pattern.

Ecdysozoa is the most species rich animal super phylum, and despite a rich fossil record of clades like arthropods, the origins of this group have historically remained elusive.

Hi all! For a brief intro, my name is Ian and Iβm a PhD student in the Girguis lab in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard. Iβm a SoCal native and UCSD/SIO grad. Throughout my dissertation, Iβm keen to study the evolution and ecological impacts of chemosynthetic symbioses in mollusks.
