โNotes from the Air: Selected Later Poemsโ, John Ashbery, 364 pages (2007) โ This anthology of Ashbery poems, selected by the author from ten different volumes published between 1987 and 2005, is one of the toughest and most rewarding books I have ever encountered. #johnashbery #notesfromtheair
So much money to be made in Russia.

โDeath in Venice and Other Talesโ, Thomas Mann, 366 pages (1998) โ Twelve stories are laid out in chronological order. You are led from his early to more mature work and you can see how his previous explorations of mortality, humiliation, aesthetics, and irony converge in โโฆVeniceโ. #thomasmann
โLast Summerโ, Catherine Breillat, 104 minutes (2023) โ A great takedown of heteronormative family values. Everything solid is built on lies. Viewed on @criterionchannel #catherinebreillat #lastsummer

One reading of the film depicts it as a parable about the aristocracy deciding to โremainโ in Francoโs fascist Spain. But it also about class differences and religion, protocols and habits. The ending is hilarious.
โDesperate Livingโ, John Waters, 90 minutes (1977) โ This film is both better and worse than I remembered. The Dreamlander-era films without Divine make you realize how much of a powerhouse she was. For sheer gross out and disgusting images however, this film excels. #johnwaters #desperateliving
โThe Exterminating Angelโ, Luis Buรฑuel, 95 minutes (1962) โ I saw this a couple times over the years, but I actually rewatched it twice this weekend. This political allegory is dense with commentary, but the thing that got me hooked and reviewing was Buรฑuelโs use of repetition. #exterminatingangel
โRizeโ, David LaChappelle, 84 minutes (2005) โ Why am I watching a documentary about clowning and krumping in Los Angeles? A collaborator suggested I watch this as part of research for a new project. The history and the dancing are fascinating, but the film itself is a bit too long.

The Queers
That is a weird coincidence! ๐
โTransformerโ, Lou Reed (1972) โ It was well beyond my usual price point but I could not resist it. I donโt know why anyone would sell this album unless they died, and some family member unwittingly sold off their collection. Itโs a 2012 pressing and it sounds amazing! #loureed #transformer
โJoyce Wieland: Heart Onโ, curated by Anne Grace and Georgiana Uhlyarik, Musรฉe des beaux-arts de Montrรฉal (2025) โ I took these photos during the opening but I need to go back. The films will be presented at Cinรฉmathรจque Quรฉbรฉcoise. Exhibition runs until May 4. #joycewieland

The lyric sheet insert from The Theโs 1983 album Soul Mining.
Handwritten lyrics to The Theโs song โThis is the Dayโ from the 1983 album Soul Mining
โSoul Miningโ, The The (1983) โ So it turns out a record can be too scratched to be enjoyable. I picked this up for $3. I might have to resell it, but it came with a cool lyrics sheet insert. Matt Johnsonโs words capture that place between adolescence and adulthood. #thethe #soulmining #mattjohnson
Seems appropriate in the present moment.

The label of the 1978 album parallel lines by Blondie showing the chrysalis logo and a butterfly
โParallel Linesโ, Blondie (1978) โ Parallel loins? I love buying used records and finding things like this inside them. They are signs of devotion. I prefer used records to new ones. Scratches and other signs of wear and tear are traces of attention. #ParallelLines #Blondie.
โLuciaโ, Humberto Solรกs, 160 minutes (1968) โ Traces episodes in the lives of three Cuban women, each named Lucรญa, from three different historical periods: the Cuban war of independence (with Spain), the 1930s, and the 1960s. Special bonus: the amazing film poster by Raรบl Martรญnez. #humbertosolas
โThe Grain of the Voiceโ, Roland Barthes, 368 pages (1985) โ I bought a used hard cover copy of this book last summer, only to realize I already had a soft cover copy at home. I fetishize these old Hill & Wang editions. They are so much better than the ugly, crappy paper editions they sell now.
โSleepers Awakeโ by John Ashbery (1995)
