A Taylor Swift lyric led me to Evan Calais, one of my favorite characters Iβve ever written. A WISH WITH WINGS is out in May! π

Basically, take the amount of money you think your favorite author gets, halve it, and then halve it again, and you have a number that's probably a lot closer to their actual earnings from writing.
"But I don't think they make that much!"
Halve that. Halve it again.
It is really weird to me when people donβt like reading and books.
I get not having enough time to read. I get wanting to read more, but there are just too many distractions around you. Obviously, I get having disabilities that make it difficult to read.
But just not liking books? Who are you?

Time is so fake, βoh we added more daylightβ no you didnβt, daylight is portioned by the cosmos repent of your hubris
If I see one more post about an extra hour of sunlight I am going to scream. We are not creating sunlight! We are just shifting the clocks! The sun would set later this time of year without our interference. Signed, a morning person who detests DST
Same problem in movies and TV. They want big, fast cash over properties with a lower opener but a steady, long tail
I lay a lot at the feet of publishers being uninterested in midlist anymore, such that theyβre trying to game the system for universally-appealing blockbusters or nothing. it pulls out a lot of the interesting variety in the middle.
Me too! Coffee scented if I can get it. And now I have a Pavlovian responseβwhen I small it, I want to write.
I just completed two responsible adult tasks that I have been putting off so I want a sticker.
I havenβt read thoseβthanks!
just became aware of this--the regime wants to clear-cut massive chunks of Oregon's old growth forests in the name of timber production.
you have until March 23rd to comment.
i know we have endless fucking things to scream at politicians about--this is an important one too.
Iβve been reading The Hidden Life of Trees. I never realized how different old forest and new forests are, particularly in how trees behave.
The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive
90 minutes is the perfect run time for me. Even 110 makes me restless.
Anything over two hours feels like torture. Certainly not true of every movie ever, but definitely find it true of most modern ones. Most don't have enough story to justify the additional run time. It ends up being bloat.
Imagine a world where children are never encouraged to draw or write or imagine stories, they are only told to consume and prompt and generate, poking the Approved Intellectual Property Characters with a stick to dance for them, but never having characters or worlds or stories of their own.
I understand why chatbot cheating happens but every time I read about it I want to gently remind everyone that the point of schoolwork is not for the submission to exist. Teachers are not just greedy for more essays or solved equations. The point is to do the work WITH YOUR OWN BRAIN, FOR LEARNING.
Unflinching refusal to use or allow the use of A.I. in reading & writing should be the uncontroversial, default position of teachers from K-12 to colleges & universities. If our administrators tell us we "have to" we tell them to eff off. We will not kill the planet's water for systemic plagiarism.
The utterance of "A.I.'s inevitability" is one of the most stark pure performatives I've seen in my time working in higher ed. Every time it is uttered, it is clearly not reporting a fact about the world but instead actively trying to create the reality it narrates. We can and must refuse.

You may laugh, but the Macbeths are a much better role model for a marriage than Romeo and Juliet. They discuss their problems (killing the king of Scotland), share their hobbies (killing the king of Scotland), and resolve their conflicts (by killing the king of Scotland).
