CHILD: I'm sad that someone stole my water bottle.
ME: I know.
CHILD: And I'm even sadder about all the horrible karma that's going to rain down on the person who stole my water bottle.
Go outside and look at the stars. That’s how far away the nearest help is.
Sooner or later, we are all going to have to reckon with the fact that we decided a boarding school baby was the Face of the Working Class purely because he seemed racist and kind of dumb.
He. Is not! A Nazi! HE!! IS!! OYSTERING!!!!!!
If Platner discourse has brought us nothing else, it has at least brought us the spectacle of pundits earnestly typing "oystering" half a dozen times per tweet
Dunno how much louder you can say this but after the last cycle bad faith operators know that our side of the aisle is susceptible to being told our politicians are 'too old' to run for office and right now its 1:1 with people saying Nazi tats are NBD
COMMUNITY gag where Secretly Racist Trampoline Gardener points to his Nazi tattoos and says "it's going to be a maze," thereby instantly causing all his friends to conclude he cannot be racist
It has been months of this
Whomst among us has not gotten a Nazi tattoo while posting Nazi things on the Internet and going on Nazi podcasts and otherwise just stepping on 27 different Nazi-branded rakes... accidentally
This is evil and nauseatingly crass, but my guess is that it’s rhetorically on point for their intended audience, right? This mashup feels like a pretty accurate summation of MAGA’s vision of masculinity.
Tragically, I have miscalculated, and am now a drunk 14-year-old who played with fireworks. I feel this form captures my spiritual essence, and will not answer further questions on it at this time.
Heads up: I'm told BE NOT AFRAID is on NetGalley. We had a weird rollout, with hiatuses and things going on and off digital platforms, so this might be your chance to really Dig In to the gloom and despair.

A lot of kids do sign up because they're misled or desperate. Every successful anti-war movement has included veterans and military families in major roles. By and large, people do not like fighting in unjust wars, and they don't like sending their children to die in them.
Fundamentally, I don't believe empathy is a limited resource, or something to be ashamed of. I would never enlist. I am horrified by the deaths of those children. Both of the people I've known who died by suicide were veterans, one a trans woman. That horrifies me, too.
As the laid off Middle East News Editor, I concur. Management eliminated the positions of every single staff correspondent and bureau chief in the Middle East.
Re-upping just because all the Discourse I could possibly engage in is less useful than this confidential, encrypted legal and peer support line for military members who believe their orders are illegal or immoral and want to know the best way to resist them.
Jesus. F*cking. Christ.
I think you're systematically discounting anything that doesn't fit your narrative. And I don't think that's a useful way to approach anything. I get that it feels better to think people who do horrible things aren't fully human, but dehumanizing the enemy is, among other things, a tactic of war.
This, from the linked resource guide, is a big block of text, but it spells out what military members can and cannot do in some detail: nlgmltf.org/military-law...
Unsurprisingly, organizations for veterans against war do have advice and resources for active military members, and it tends to be more complicated than "just quit." aboutfaceveterans.org/military-res...
Veterans have been a pretty major force for anti-war organizing. There's a reason for that: www.vvaw.org
There are a million ways for an asshole to be an asshole, or a bigot to be a bigot, and they should be held accountable for those choices, but the power to declare war ultimately comes down to our government, which does all it can to ensure a steady stream of cannon fodder.
IDK. A lot of the men in my family have been in the military and they all emerged left-to-liberal. I never joined, I never had to, but the cousins in my generation who joined explicitly did it so they could afford college. Everyone has experiences, but I still think the US is to blame for the wars.
