full disclosure: I'm TERRIBLE at following my own advice!!! but this is still true, and still great advice!!!
Things you can't control:
If someone will like your story
If an editor will buy your story
If people, even friends/family, will read your story
Things you can control:
If your story shines; if it's the best it can be
If editors have a chance to read it
Keep. Writing.
This interview is one of my most honest and upfront. I also wax poetic a few times bc Iβm old. Anyway, thank you Shingai Njeri Kagunda. Great questions!
It's time! Nominations are now open for the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction, which will be given to a work of imaginative fiction, published in 2025, that reflects the concepts and ideas that were central to Ursulaβs own work.
Cover of the March April 2021 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, with Harry Turtledove, Cat Rambo, Marie Brennan, C.L. Polk, and Molly Tanzer's names on the cover. The image features a strange assemblage of discordant pieces, forming a composite face, and an astronaut walking up to the massive face.
Cover of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction Volume 1, Summer 2025, with Nnedi Okorafor, Maurice Broaddus, Justin C. Key, Matthew Kressel & Mercurio D. Rivera, John Shirley, Inda Lauryn all listed on the cover. A Black cyberpunk-ish figure is in the front, full, long dreadlocks, trench coat, having pulled a sword with an umbrella handle from its sheath, against a futuristic cityscape and a stunning orange-red sky with turquoise touches.
My first "By the Numbers" was in the Mar/Apr 2021 F&SF!
Each entry examines an aspect of genre publishing - magazines, awards, publishers, etc.

A truly beautiful story.
Too many people are talking about whether or not a certain person who blurted a certain word is to blame.
Not enough people are talking about the harm that these things cause.
I shared some thoughts on Facebook....

I used to eat them quite a bit when I lived in Santa Barbara (as well as starfruit) but somehow my habits changed, I think because of the availability of quality cherimoya
A big, whole cherimoya on a white cutting board
Close up of a big, whole cherimoya
A large cherimoya cut into four quarters on a white cutting board, with a knife next to it
Haven't had cherimoya in quite a while! This one is *sweet*!

my most salient bit of advice for folks entering the publishing industry in any capacity:
most ppl don't read emails too carefully.π
keep 'em brief, and clear as possible!

Everything in these three issues is eligible for current awards. We weren't around long enough to gain momentum, but have received *a lot* of lovely reviews and comments from Maria Haskins, Alex Brown, Charles Payseur, and others. Go ahead - give these authors a chance. Read something *Fantastic*!β€οΈβπ₯
I'm firmly in the "not looking at Godzilla Minus Zero spoilers" camp. Godzilla Minus One was a brilliant, layered film, rich with character work and important themes. I'm mainly wondering how they'll follow up on that... or if they'll go for a simpler "let's just do standard Godzilla stuff" thing.

young cat Tian Tian staring up at my lap from under my desk, looking like a pounce might be in order
young cat Tian Tian looking up at me from beside the chair, calculating the jump from floor to lap, factoring in the arm rest for good measure
Tian Tian is VERY skeptical about the ethics of not letting kitties sit on my lap while I'm working...
writers,
in this industry, sometimes you have to make difficult decisions.
sometimes that will look similar to what someone else did...
sometimes it will be totally different.
know that it is okay if your path doesn't mirror someone else's;
and that it is important to take care of yourself.
Promo image for Daughter of the Hunt, Kβs new novel. It says βthe hunt begins. Be one of the first to read daughter of the hunt, available as a read now on net galley 16-19β
A plot summary of Daughter of the Hunt. When a goddess falls for her sacrifice, can their love survive? Iphigenia Pelops lives only to serve her family. As the eldest child, it is her responsibility and privilegeβas well as the only safeguard against the family curse. So when Artemis, Queen of the Court of the Wild, demands a sacrifice in exchange for a blessing during a power struggle, Iphigenia seems the natural choice. However, Artemis is horrified when she learns that Iphigeniaβs family offered her without her consent. As recompense, she takes Iphigenia as her disciple and teaches her the ways of the huntβand soon the ways of the body as love blossoms between them. Only Iphigenia cannot escape her precious siblings, doomed to misfortune by the Pelops curseβand freeing them will require a terrible cost. Daughter of the Hunt is available in all formats 3/17/26
In most cases, we would start the story on the day I died. Greek gods mixed with fae courts, Iliad retelling, breaking family curse, Sapphic and ace representarion, mental health representation, bondage π
Hereβs more about my next book, DAUGHTER OF THE HUNT!
Didi - young cat, gray with some white on his face and legs, snuggled up on a blanket in a lap, with hands gently touching him
Didi is our most cuddly cat! If we sit anywhere he can get to, he will snuggle up in our lap!
