The World Health Organization building

The World Health Organization building

The World Health Organization will slash its budget for 2026-27 by more than a fifth after the US withdrew, and other nations reduced, its funding.

WHO reportedly plans to cut back the scale of its projects and workforce to tackle a funding gap of nearly $600m this year

For public health, this means water scarcity, food insecurity due to loss of fishing and agriculture, and increased risk of waterborne disease, among other issues.

This World Water Day 2025, March 22, calls for β€˜Glacier Preservation’ to protect water security, health, and ecosystems. #WorldWaterDay

Humboldt Glacier’s Demise Venezuela is the first postglacial nation in the Andes, as its last substantial patch of ice is now considered too small to flow under its own weight.

In Venezuela’s Sierra Nevada de MΓ©rida, the Humboldt Glacier has shrunk to a small ice field, marking the loss of the country’s last glacier. It no longer has sufficient weight to flow downstream. Glaciers serve as natural freshwater reserves and feed river systems, vital to public health.

Gender equality is more important than ever as the world increasingly embraces views that restrict women's rights & opportunities. To improve health, women and men need to show support for inclusive and gender-responsive policies in all sectors, including education, employment & the workforce #IWD

Maternal mortality, reproductive rights, violence, & healthcare access remain critical issues. Women are the backbone of the health workforce but remain underrepresented in leadership. #IWD

Battling misinformation and disinformation

Battling misinformation and disinformation

naccurate information about diseases, treatments and vaccines undermines trust in science and public health. It threatens global health by distorting public perception and eroding confidence in evidence-based policies. During emergencies and conflicts, misinformation exacerbates health crises by fostering confusion and fear and diverting resources from a coordinated response. This erosion of public trust is leaving populations vulnerable to preventable diseases and fueling inequities.

WHO continues to fight against misinformation and disinformationβ€”a great challenge to global health. Governments, health agencies, and partners need to safeguard public trust by responding to misinformation and disinformation directly and effectively.

It is looking increasingly likely the way global north countries are pushing climate change, is directly harming poverty reduction. We haven't properly grappled with how climate requirements are harming human capital, and how climate financing is taking money from poverty, health and education 1/n

Aotearoa NZ set a global precedent in 2022 by moving to implement #tobacco endgame measures. These have since been repealed.

This new commentary calls for "a return to evidence to ensure the continued improvement of public health and reduction of avoidable inequities."

Despite being non-binding and the result of an internationally negotiated process, many countries – including Australia, Italy, Hungary and the United States - have refused to sign on.

Calling on governments to support the agreement would be a good way to acknowledge IMD.

The paper's historical argument in a nutshell: "even though the panic over the β€œyellow peril” was coded in the language of insurmountable difference, that is, race, the social logic of that threat was one of equivalence, that is, capital."
