Marine scientist & Head of Environmental Div. at MFRI Iceland. Seeking a social world with civil and informed discussions and debates, kindness and humor. Very much hoping for a useful platform for sharing updates on scientific activities and discoveries
I'm a bit proud of our country sometimes. One of my proudest moments came in 2009 when an openly #gay female got elected priminister. No one gave any thought about her being female gay, exept the foreign media. Go #diversity Go #LGBTQ #iceland 🇮🇸 🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️
My monthly #Arctic temperature graphics have just been updated through February 2025, which was one of the most anomalous months on record for this region: zacklabe.com/arctic-tempe...

Our natural systems are changing fast. Anti-science attitude and policies are an embarrassment to the human earth population at this stage. There is screaming evidence for climate change, and we know it will hurt.
The events unfolding in the US are beyond sad and scary. This piece is a good one, Highlighting that:

I do! Can contact Guðmundur J. Óskarsson @ the MFRI Iceland.
How I hope that 2025 people will leave X behind and join Bluesky (or whatever) instead. The power that comes with owning a social media platform comes with poeple using it.
In recognition of us doing fuck all to reduce emissions, let me remind y'all that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is useless unless we decarbonize drastically.

Hi here!
Bar chart displaying per capita CO2 emissions for 2021. The United States shows significantly higher emissions at 14.86 tons, compared to low-income countries, which have emissions of 0.28 tons. Land use change is not included.
In thinking about what rich nations owe the developing world, here’s something to keep in mind:
The average American emits more CO₂ in one week than an average person in low-income countries does in one year.
Eruption started last night... hope the blue lagoon and powerplant will be ok.🤞

A while back I created a map of the fisheries footprint in Icelandic waters: veidar.hafogvatn.is
Now working on an update. All done within the wonderful world of #rstats
Mæli með viðtali við Maria Ressa í Silfrinu á dögunum (byrjar á mínútu 35). Tel hana hitta marga nagla á höfuðið í viðtalinu sem fjallar um lýðræði á tímum upplýsingaóreiðu og auðvitað komið inn á samfélagsmiðla og hefðbundna fjölmiðla.

Joining Bluesky feels like showing up for a fun party full of interesting people and even more showing up (or flowing in). Hope we have stumbled on to something good here...
