A black and white illustration inspired by Susan Hill's novel The Woman in Black. A woman in late Victorian mourning stands in a graveyard in a flat desolate landscape. There are two stone pillars in the foreground.

An illustration of the ghost of a woman in a dress of the mid to late Georgian era with a sort of skeletal face. She is stood / hovering in front of a detached Georgian house in the dusk, flanked by dark trees, with its front door lit from above.

A print of a black and white illustration inspired by John Masefield's novel the Box of Delights: a bearded man with a heavy pack trudges through snow pursued by wolves. There's a big white house in the distance, and a small aeroplane (in fact a car-o-plane) in the sky. The scene is flanked by trees and emerges from a square box. The face of its beholder is just visible.

A ridiculous black and white illustration (in print form) of worshippers dancing around a ceremonial bonfire in the trees. The flames take the shape of a large cat's head.

Hello! I've been a bit preoccupied lately with real life and stuff but I've finally put a bit of effort into my Etsy shop... added new prints and restocked old ones. Do have a look. Sharing much appreciated. Thank you.

Lady of the Hermitage. Bit cheesy but I had the urge to draw a spooky Georgian, inspired by Hermitage House in Edinburgh, which was built around 1780.

Hello! Long time no see! Here’s today’s WIP, a pencil crayon drawing of Tom Durie, jester to Anne of Denmark, from Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger 1614 portrait. I started this intending to do a scribbly, scratchy, quick thing but I don’t seem to be able to do that.

Aw I feel honoured! Thank you for asking me to draw it, and for introducing me to the story which I’d never read! X

Yes. I’ve spent a ridiculous fortune on posh propelling pencils in the past but frankly the cheapo plastic ones are often just as good / comfortable to use!! I suppose it’s the lead that’s the really important thing, though I’m definitely not that fussy when it comes to those either!

A black pen in a crosshatch technique and black block printing ink applied with a roller on white paper illustration. The dark silhouetted shape of a woman in a black funeral dress stands at the foot of a bed in an Edwardian style room, she stares at a tired looking man under a heavy quilt. Moonlight shines into the room from behind the woman. Creepy and atmospheric.

I left my old job a couple of years ago. I’m getting by (just) but crikey, having done my tax return & seen how little I’m earning it was a shocker, it’s getting more & more difficult to earn money from illustration.

I have been out of action too so…I’ll get cracking!

Buy my art (FEBRUARY) 🙏🏻

I used a 5mm (I think) propelling pencil (which is my favoured pencil type cos I can’t be arsed with sharpening) and a bit of Blackwing, whose eraser I also used rather than the rubbish one attached to the propelling pencil. Not sure what type of lead it is. Probably 2B.

A pencil drawing in an open sketchbook of a jumbled collection of stuffed animal head trophies and antlers on a bed. There are stacked picture frames along the walls and propped next to the fireplace. It's a room in the National Trust property Calke Abbey.

I love Calke Abbey. Here's a sketch I did yesterday from a photo I took there a few years ago.

hah yes, and the parents looked ANCIENT and they probably weren't much older than me (51). All quite depressing really. Apart from the groovy one with short hair and the job in fashion - I wonder if her trajectory was a bit different from the others.

A very rough some would describe as “poor” sketch of a giant stag with a tiny head. Alan of the Glen is written next to it.

Happy Burns Night. A more important national day than St Andrew’s and it’s for a poet. My art isn’t very Scottish (people who don’t know me often guess I’m Irish for some reason) but there are occasional clues.

It’s Robert Burns’ birthday and in there somewhere in my Michael Marra, Neil Gow, Dougie Maclean, growing up in Ayr tribute to socialist folks wandering about the hills of a weekend in the 1950’s pointing at things.

Went to do some drawing, got distracted by 1965 Man Alive film on YouTube about 4 women sharing a flat. So I drew that. ‘Girls’ playing at real life before settling down and marrying. Indulging in the mild tedium of independence before the real drudge begins seems to be the message.
