The truth is simple: Maryland — and Baltimore County — are facing a real housing shortage.
Teachers. Nurses. Police officers. Firefighters. Young families. Seniors.
Too many people who work here can’t afford to live here.
And in Annapolis this week, Delegate Nick Allen asked thoughtful questions during a hearing of the House Environment & Transportation Committee about how we get this right.
I’m grateful for strong partners in the Moore–Miller Administration who are working on this challenge, including Secretary Jake Day at the Department of Housing and Community Development and others pushing real solutions.
That’s why I support the proposal from @govwesmoore.bsky.social to unlock underused land near transit for new homes. Smart housing growth near transit means families can live closer to jobs, reduce commuting costs, and strengthen our communities.
As detailed earlier this week in The @baltimoresun.bsky.social, housing costs are rising. Families are getting pushed out. And Baltimore County needs real solutions.

That’s a double whammy for working families.
It’s also an economic development issue. Good-paying employers follow the workforce — and workforce follows housing they afford.
If young workers and families can’t afford to live here, they’ll build their futures elsewhere — and the jobs will follow.
Opportunity should be within reach for every family in Baltimore County.
But the article we’re sharing from The Baltimore Banner (linked in the thread) highlights a troubling trend: incomes in Baltimore County have been falling for years, even as housing costs continue to rise.

• Expand youth mental health services and stabilize placements.
• Improve coordination among Social Services, law enforcement, and providers.
• Ensure teens aging out have real pathways to housing, education, and jobs.

As County Executive, in partnership with you, I will:
• Conduct a full system audit and fix what isn’t working.
• Launch “FosterStat” — a public dashboard to track outcomes and ensure accountability.
That’s why I have a clear, detailed plan — built from hundreds of conversations across our county — to strengthen and modernize our local foster care system.
Baltimore County manages one of the largest foster care caseloads in Maryland. Each year, more than 100 children enter care — often in the middle of crisis and trauma. When the state steps in, it must get it right.
Every child deserves to be safe, protected, and given a real chance to thrive — especially when they are in the care of the state.
As the General Assembly considers Kanaiyah’s Law, we are reminded that foster care reform isn’t abstract policy. It’s about real children. Real families. Real lives.
