SO MUCH optimism. It's not that we didn't know there was suffering and bad things in the world, but we felt confident it could get better. Class of 2000 and we were going to save the whales, stop the hole in the ozone, and make a difference!
Cupich: βA real war with real death and real suffering being treated like itβs a video game -itβs sickening. Hundreds of people are dead, mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, including scores of children who made the fatal mistake of going to school that day.β www.archchicago.org/en/statement...
βBe kind, be involved, believe in your art,β he said. βAt a time when people tell you art is not important, that is always the prelude to fascism. When they tell you it doesnβt matter, when they tell you a fucking app can do art you say, if itβs that important, why the fuck do they want it so bad? The answer is because they think they can debase everything that makes us a little better, a little more human. And that, in my book, and in my life, includes monsters.β
Love this from Guillermo del Toro
Pulling a point I made in some replies onto main: I think one big shift in how the public is reacting to people who don't vaccinate their kids is that as recently as, say, 2023, you could look at your anti-vax neighbors as annoying flakes and a theoretical risk - but far lower case numbers meant...
"It would be nice, I think," Elena Venner said, "for our government to at least acknowledge that we are in this climate crisis and to start by not repealing what we already have."
My son has recently discovered Johnny Cash amd I am enjoying it so much!
Interestingly, although I adore my kids and think babies are sweet, I'm still not a baby person in general. I'd much rather wrangle toddlers/preschoolers absolutely any day of the week.
Cats are great and all, but fir sheer joie de vivre, you can't beat ducks
Of course, that's an "industrial economy" mindset, where capital investment is calculated over a lengthy timeframe to ensure future competitiveness.
Trump II's logic is that of a post-industrial "financialized economy" mindset of immediate gains and sweating the assets.
The legitimacy that came of a US commitment to self-restraint, however hypocritical it was at times, was based on a calculation not just of power differentials but of time horizons.
By sacrificing maximal gains in the present, the US was able to reassure partners so its power lasts into the future.
Seeing Noem get pushed aside at least gives me the one piece of constant reliable Schadenfreude with Trump. It doesnβt how much you degrade yourself for him; eventually, he will always push you to the side. And thatβs if youβre lucky.
Why did I need to read this so badly right this very moment π
World bad but bills due, so...
Next Tuesday, March 10th, is the release of BUTTERFLY EFFECTS, the fifteenth (!!) book in my InCryptid series of urban fantasy chaos adventures!
I'll give AI the same credit. I believe it has specific uses and potential. I won't fight with ppl in other fields if they are certain about their use cases (I will fight with my field). But I have deep concerns about broad spectrum use in daily life
We'd be better off if plastic had been cautiously adopted for things like medicine (single use syringes! Durable medical equipment! Glasses and contacts!) and specialized uses (mylar for archival photos! Disaster kits!) And not in creating an absolute sea of consumer plastic that we now swim in.
I'll give it more credit. It's useful like plastic, which is indeed useful and convenient, but has had massive negative externalities.

My despair-fighting deed of the day: donated an exhibition piece to an awesome Ypsi therapist office / health community hub, because everyone deserves some wild wonder when they're going through it!

A spotted red brown goat lays flat on his side uses a younger golden brown goat for a pillow while they both chew their cud.
We're out here watching Liz the goat give birth while behind us the rest of the goats sunbathe. Goats like forming cuddle piles as Terror and Chocolate demonstrate.

I know that the people who need to read this arenβt here, but here goes:
Rules of engagement arenβt for the enemy. Theyβre for you. Theyβre for your soldiers when theyβre captured or wounded. Theyβre for your civilians when theyβre in range of the enemy. Theyβre for your allies, to reassure.
I have enjoyed Guillermo Del Toroβs Frankenstein & Emerald Fennellβs Wuthering Heights & Iβm looking forward to Maggie Gyllenhaalβs The Bride!
But my question is: who is your dream visionary director to adapt a literary (or cinematic) classic?
I think: Wes Andersonβs Evelina-balance, wit, sadness

With all the money spent on silver bullets, we could probably have just spent it on teacher salaries and gotten further along (but then VCs wouldn't get their cut)
3/3 And I can't bear to think of what happened next. But I can't stop thinking about their smiles that their parents will never see again.
2/3I thought about them all day as I wrote emails and edited docs. I thought about their smiles. And I thought about the little Iranian schoolgirls who must have also been happy and with their friends on Saturday morning.
