The Arctic overturning circulation: transformations, pathways and timescales
Abstract. The Arctic is the northernmost terminus of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and is an important source of the densest waters feeding its lower limb. However, relatively little...
๐Where and how is dense water in the Arctic formed? In our new paper, we decompose the Arctic overturning circulation (ArMOC), the northernmost part of the AMOC. Check it out ๐ฝ

Currently a large outbreak of cold, Arctic air is making its way south over the Norwegian Sea. The amazing mesh structure (called open-cell convection) in the satellite image (coloured image) is really hard for weather forecast models (grey image) to get 'right' @bjerknes.uib.no #ISOSCAN_project

Fisheye photo of a massive green and red curtain of aurora taken from a pier next to a fjord. The pier can be seen in the lower right corner with some people on it and few trees to the right. The fjord and the land on the other side can be seen on the lower left part of the picture. Finally the aurora appears like a massive mountain of light rising from the sea to, almost, the top of the picture. It presents shades of green and yellow on its lower part, with the majority in bright to deep red. Finally, of strong reflection of the aurora appears on the sea in a curved lower band in the pic.
Last year on this day, we had what is so far the best aurora show I ever saw in Bergen... and by far! It was also the first night I could play with my new fisheye lens. I had a lot of fun! I am really looking f... Read more on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/DPoS7dUAjM6/

By applying a tracking method to both climate models and satellite data, @davyclimate.bsky.social found that sea ice age is a more sensitive indicator of change than ice thickness or volume.

In the Arctic, sea ice has a leading impact on ocean surface dynamics, mainly in the regions that are seasonally ice-covered. Supply et al., examine the seasonal cycle of the ocean surface conditions in the seasonal ice zone ๐

Atlantification drives recent strengthening of the Arctic overturning circulation
A less ice-covered Arctic shifts dense water formation northward, strengthening the Arctic Ocean overturning circulation.
The Arctic Ocean acts to stabilize the AMOC
New paper in #ScienceAdvances by researchers from @bjerknes.uib.no and @oxuniearthsci.bsky.social showing how ongoing Atlantification and sea ice loss leads to a strengthening of the Arctic overturning circulation.

Searching for navigable seas and better ice predictions
When Roald Amundsen planned his ship expedition to the North Pole, he saw no other option than sending his crew into the air to search for open leads.โฆ
Means have changed, the aim is the same. Developing tools for navigation through sea ice requires creativity and technical skills, as shown by Anton Korosov and Artem Moiseev from @nansensenteret.bsky.social. ๐ ๐งช
