We have been advocating for provincial oversight for local elected behaviour for over 6 years. Interested to see what changes might happen in BC and ON to curb the abhorrent behaviour that goes unchecked in local governments.
We have 2 big asks: 1 - a provincial ethics commissioner and ....
Being part of a party also means being part of a movement, being in community, and having and giving support (depends on the party, of course!)

If you're thinking of running in any of the main cities in BC for mayor/council/school board, it's time to think about what party to join.
Election rules changed before 2022 so you can't share $ or data with other candidates unless you belong to the same electoral organization (party). 1/
If you don't have a favourite elected, reach out to us. We're happy to connect you with elected people near you so you can get some information on what it really means to serve in your local government.
And in the fall, maybe apply for campaign school so you'll be ready to run!

In a little over 15 months, BC will be voting in municipal elections again. Seems so far away, but it's really not.
Great elected leaders are looking for new people to join school board and councils. If you even have the tiniest idea you might want to lead, talk to your favourite elected. or....
Accountability on councils isn't just a BC problem - Ontario has their own Rob Vagramov (remember him?) situation on their hands. It's the 3 silent protesters who got arrested, but the councilor charged with ahuse is still there.

Poor behavior with no real mechanism for accountability erodes democracy. It limits us to candidates who are willing to 'put up with' bad behavior in order to govern. We deserve better than that.
Ready for that provincial Ethics Commissioner. Been ready for it since 2019.
While the chaos and harassment in Kamloops is abhorrent, this is a quiet and pervasive issue in local governments. We documented reports of decades of harassment. It needs to be checked. It is eroding democracy.
We've been advocating for this for a long time and support some big changes at the provincial level. Read more at localrepresentation.ca/report/

Unchecked and Unchallenged, the behaviour of elected officials in local government is a problem. It's a problem for many who want to serve but won't, for staff who have no recourse for abuse, and for residents who are losing trust when councils can just suspend process when they don't like it.
Tonight at our last session of campaign school, we cover media training, which is good for learning to stay on message.
The golden rule is: If you don't want to be quoted on it, don't say it.
And that goes for posting on social media. *ahem*

Session 4 is tonight with this co-hort.
Campaign school is hard skills, and a lot of digging into why you're running. What do you want to accomplish? Why do you need to be elected to do that?
These are questions every candidate should be able to answer.
We're spending #InternationalWomensDay in the company of women elected to local government @civicgovernance.bsky.social High Ground conference today.
Women are regularly erased from history. Their accomplishments and efforts diminished. Be intentional and shine your light on women every day.
Could we attract more representative governments? Bring people with lived experience into decision making positions? Would that investment get us further faster?
We should be asking ourselves who we want in these roles, not who is the lowest bidder. After all, you get what you pay for, right?
If we want leaders who really represent our whole communities, we need to create opportunity for that to happen. What if we designed compensation and supports for elected around what a single parent, a disabled person, or someone living in poverty might need?

Then let's add in equity. When we want people who can do the job for the least amount of pay, we're talking about people who have some sort of access to wealth. be it time (retired, self employed), financial (personal wealth, pension, etc).
And that narrows the field for who can govern. /4
It's this grey area where 'we' kind of think of it as volunteerism - do it for the greater good with no personal gain. Yet we want people to be available 24/7, and solve the biggest, most pressing issues of our communities, provinces, and country.
