The differences of opinion on this are interesting. People seem to feel very strongly about it but very little justification for their belief expressed

And my parents lived with my maternal grandma in her council house until I was 3/4.

I think it all depends on where you lived. We had much less to pay for. No car, heating was 2 coal fires & my grandma was a pit widow so free coal, no electrical stuff (fridge etc) no phone, simple washing machine, gas ring (had coal oven next to fire)

It happened here. My mum worked until my younger brother was born but not after that. I don't remember my grandmothers working and they have been in their early 50s when I was born. But my grandads & my dad all did shift work with long hard shifts so mothers probably needed at home for childcare

I tend to chat with strangers at every opportunity just now as I've nobody to talk to at home during day

Rather grumpy cashier who said she should charge me as I wasn't one of their customers. I pointed out that the letter specifically said Nat West would not charge & she sniffed at me. I suggested she take it up with the DWP & she muttered about it being above her pay grade.

Breakfast in M&S cafe achieved. On with shopping

I know. I was going to do it online but given recent, mixed, experience I thought in person might be s good idea. My bank doesn't have a branch but the DWP apparently have some kind of deal with Nat West & we have one of those. Several have gone though

The woman who was originally setting up the DD was really nice but apparently messed up. The man who sorted it out for me this morning was lovely

Bank says transaction went through but having been told my direct debit had been set up last month & discovering now that it hadn't been I'm going for a belt & braces approach. Now waiting for DVLA to phone back.
Then off to repay Michael's December pension in person at a bank (just to be sure)

Absolutely no chance. I've already had to sort out a banking issue. Still, that bit has been sorted. Next stop DVLA

Now an issue with my credit card so need to speak to the bank

Similarly those advocating harsh discipline. We're harsh measures used on them & they think it worked?
"Lax" discipline & they believe it didn't?

I have so many questions

I do wonder what the childhoods of those pushing the direct instruction stuff were like.
Did they sit at a desk being told things, learn lots of facts and think that's wonderful? Or did they have a lots of hands on experience & believe they missed out?
Or can't they remember being a child?
