I suspect there's still reasons to do so in the same ways that repainting the masters is a time honored way of studying art.
But yeah, I LOVE the Pop goes Punk albums and end up deeply confused sometimes when the lyft is playing a pop station and I don't know why I recognize the song.
Those are my favorite sorts of covers--if you're not remaking the song in a totally new style/direction, what's the point? (An exception obviously for The Ataris's Boys of Summer)
Who even is the original artist sometimes? Not everyone writes their own songs in the first place, so are they the original artist just because they're the first person to release it?
Just remembered the time in HS when someone asked what i was reading and i was like "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" and they were (in 2026 terminology) like "omg, James Baldwin? how woke (admiringly)" and I was like " No, H F Saint." and we just stared at each other in confusion for a moment.
