My Lenten journey this year has been one of love. I don't mean that to sound Pollyanna or turn the other cheek. It's not that at all. What I mean is that I am doing my best to approach each situation with an open heart and to filter all the noise through love. There are plenty, and I do mean plenty, of situations that hurt me. There are more than a few, way more than a few, people who cause me distress. But, ya know what? I'm not everyone's cup of tea, either. For too long, I was reacting to things that offended me, that opposed my beliefs, that were counter to all I hold dear. I tried to educate, but let's face it, I was doing what was being done to me, even if I was convinced, and honestly still am convinced, that it was the right thing. I tried to strike down the fear and the hate with a loud, booming, confident voice. A demeaning, belittling, self-righteous one. I am trying to understand, even if I don't agree, what led to the differences. I am trying to hold space so someone else can be heard the way I want to be heard. I am not jumping up on my soapbox but listening, not judging, and calmly offering my perspective, even in small, digestible amounts. I meditate each day sending love, peace, harmony, and healing into the world. It is not always easy, but overall I am feeling more balanced. If we want to dispel the shadows, we need to shine a light. If we want to overcome fear, we need to offer solace. Love truly is stronger than hate, but hate is so much easier, and that is why it seems so much more prevalent. Be the Light.
