A bronze statuette of a Hindu saint, acquired by the Ashmolean in 1967, has been returned to a temple in Tamil Nadu. The Ashmolean had been alerted to doubts around its provenance in 2019 and voluntarily approached Indian authorities for an investigation.

I’m surprised they were giving that out in 1974! There was a pre-war copy in my grandparents’ house and I always found it disturbing and unsuitable for children like myself. Which didn’t stop me reading it, though! All part of my impression that people in the past were weird

Red, orange, yellow over the wall at the end of the park. The yellow flowers are a laburnum tree, the rest are two colours of pyracantha berries. A welcome burst of colour at the end of winter
