On a much smaller scale this has been happening in my local area for years. We had a thriving original music scene. It's very much a covers scene now. No one seemingly wants original material or at least to pay for it.
selling three-quarters of the records we used to sell, twice the amount of promo, and finding it doubly hard to sell the same number of tickets for a gig – those are the things which turn our tiny margin of sustainability into catastrophic financial doom.

I believe it's massively devalued it.
New music is more difficult than ever to find and what would have been an exceptional album never gets "discovered" due to the bias of the algorithms towards big acts.
