Also, feeling very strange that more time has passed since this episode aired than my age was at the time.
I still show this episode whenever I'm teaching on media representations. Glee did a lot of things badly, but it's effect on my teen years, and the ways in which it helped me start to figure out who I was in the midst of a very confusing, scary home and school life, can't be understated.
I can't explain enough how transformative this moment was for 13 year old me. I'd never seen something like this on television before - it completely changed the trajectory of my life, and made me feel seen in a way I didn't really understand. I came out a couple of months later.
