it comes to protecting your lungs from wildfire smoke, not all masks are created equal, and how you wear them also matters. N95 masks are made from flat mats of very fine fibers that collect airborne particles. These masks are designed to filter out 95 percent of small particulate matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter - a size so small you can't see it with the naked eye. That's smaller than the thinnest human hair, about 16 microns in diameter. It works best on a cleanshaven face. Do not cross the straps. The mask should have two straps: one goes over your ear, the other goes under. Pinch the metal piece so the mask fits snugly on your nose. Look for "N95," "NIOSH" or "P100" printed on your mask. N95*- The mask should seal tightly to your face.
