What exactly does “all lawful use” of AI mean? No one knows.
“Lawful” is a legal floor that will look increasingly shaky as AI capabilities advance. It doesn’t answer whether we have adequate civil liberties guardrails or technical safety standards in place.

Marco reports another Minuteman III ICBM test launch planned for early next month.
USAF is trying to replace Minuteman with Sentinel but is over budget and behind schedule. Mil said Minuteman couldn’t be life-extended but now has to operate it for another 15 years. fas.org/publication/...

An Argument for Renewing the Administrative State
The American administrative state, since its modern creation out of the New Deal and the post-WWII order, has proven that it can do great things. But it needs some reinvention first.
“We need not lose faith in the administrative state itself; we would do better to view it as having functioned with its hands tied tighter and tighter. But we are now starting, particularly in the climate and energy space, to hit real limits.” At @scientistsorg.bsky.social fas.org/publication/...

So we’re launching CRI with a focus on climate: a space where there’s an increasingly evident mismatch between the functions the government needs to provide and the tools it has to deliver.

Solving today’s problems with yesterday’s strategies isn’t working… and it’s eroding faith in government. CRI is designed to bring that faith back.
We want to restore gov’s capacity to achieve big, ambitious goals while making life better, safer, and cheaper for Americans.

The Environmental Protection Agency claims that the endangerment finding led to ‘costly burdens’ on American families and businesses, when in reality it’s the cost of failing to regulate climate pollution that will hit people the hardest.

Revoking the endangerment finding would shove science aside in favor of special interests – at the expense of American health and wellbeing.

Exclusive: New initiative seeks to tackle "big ideas" on climate
The Federation of American Scientists is launching an initiative that aims to promote creative thinking for how government can tackle climate change and other challenges.
"FAS [ @scientistsorg.bsky.social ] is starting the Center for Regulatory Ingenuity, which the group says will create "high-trust environments to brainstorm and refine the big ideas that will breathe new life into government" while building a "network of networks" to help implement those ideas."

In 2024, 1 in 3 households had to forgo food or medicine to keep the lights on, and 20M are in debt to their utility companies.
Absent policy change, prices will continue to increase.
States can create more clean energy supply – and fast. Here's how.

Trust between nuclear armed states (and those that want to be) is at an all-time low. On-site inspectors are increasingly unrealistic, but something has to take their place.
One idea: cooperative technical means focusing on remote investigations with both expert- and algorithmic-powered analysis.
