As usual, nuance and understanding the context is importantβ¦ Iβve seen some good examples of the importance of studying both sexesβ¦ but the policy has been interpreted rather strictly
Often it is due to sex differences in drug metabolism in rodents, which do not replicate in humans. So the blanket duplication of experiments may needlessly increase animal use, or worse (if mixing male and female animals) will increase within-group variability and diminish statistical power.
