Like, you don’t have to do that. You’re SO LUCKY. You’re making a fortune doing something you love, that you’re good at, and you are *constantly* given rewards, encouragement, applause, recognition of all kinds.
You just don’t have to do that.

If Timothee Chalamet wants to make being a reverse-snob part of his deal, whatever. Be a child, you know?
But at a time when arts funding and support are so imperiled, it would be nice not to lead with your contempt for wide swaths of the arts during your campaign to have your own art recognized.

The latest Bridgerton press cycle has brought up, again, the question of the real Queen Charlotte’s race. I recorded this podcast, with experts, a few years ago to learn more about why some people see her as Black, and others don’t. “Was Queen Charlotte Really Black?” —> pod.link/1489560920/e...
There’s only 20 copies left of my book POPCORN DISABILITIES in stock at Amazon!
The book was a labor of love, discussing disability representation in the movies. I have no idea if Amazon will get more (I don’t have faith because of the publisher) so buy your copy now.

Episode image for Sarah Biffen featuring some of Biffen’s art, and a picture of Kristen Lopez
Sarah Biffen was one of the most popular portrait artists of the Regency Era. How did a farm workers daughter, born with no hands, become so successful she even painted the King? We discuss her epic story this week on Vulgar History, with guest @kristenklopez.bsky.social

Listen to an episode where we talk disabled history, cast Sarah Biffen’s biopic, and declare that Charles Dicken can fuck off.

Photo of the wordless picture book Why by Nikolai Popov. The cover is a frog sitting on a rock in a field.
One of the best wordless picture books about war.
Speaking of Bridgerton, when white people try to claim ethnic diversity due to a distant non white ancestor, they get pushback. So why are we so insistent on saying the modern day English royalty gets to be mixed when we claim Charlotte was mixed? Which you have to go back 200 years in HER tree.
Ooh thanks for the tip! I’m so intrigued by Mary Robinson

Silhouette of a woman with an enormous updo hairdo, long 18th century gown, and an absurd hat perched atop.
How can you be talking about HISTORY with everything that's going on. 18th century history? Women's history? Waves hands.
Friends, it is precisely because of everything that's going on that we need to talk about history much, much more.
Maybe it’s because I’m a colonial historian but so many of these white nation states seem to behave exactly like they did in the 19th century: ‘your leaders aren’t right for you,’ ‘we’re only killing you/colonizing you/installing puppet leaders for your own good’
Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.
