A Red-shouldered Hawk is perched on a small branch surrounded by bare sticks. Its body faces left, but head is turned to right facing a male Red-winged Blackbird flying at it with wings and tail spread. The blackbird has bright red and yellow shoulder epaulets. A female dotterel is a small, plump wading bird, similar in size to a thrush but with a shorter, more compact, and rounded shape. During the breeding season (spring and summer), the female is more vibrant and brightly coloured than the male. The most striking feature is a broad, bright white stripe (supercilium) that runs above each eye and meets in a V-shape on the back of the neck. This white line strongly contrasts with a very dark, blackish-brown top of the head (crown). She has a rich, chestnut-orange (or bright rufous) belly, which acts as a vivid splash of colour against her lighter breast. Across her upper chest, she has a subtle grey-buff band. Below this, she has a very distinct white band, which is bordered by a thin, dark, sharp line, making it stand out. The upper part of her back is a uniform, warm grey, brown. She is often described as having a "chubby" or "bum-bobbing" appearance when standing on rocky, mountainous terrain. During winter, both sexes become much duller and greyer, losing the bright belly and sharp head contrast.
