A drunken driver's car crash left him paralyzed. Now he's a Paralympian. Steve Emt was a walk-on basketball player at the University of Connecticut before a drunk driving accident changed the direction of his life.

Good for him but this is nothing to celebrate. Perhaps if he didn't kill anyone when he had his accident. A very good friend of ours, the father of two young daughters was murdered by a drunk driver 30 years ago. It was a devastating loss. He never went to prison.

But we can do it. We can heal. And healing takes many different forms. This looks like healing to me. Please read carefully and take pause and consideration before commenting.

I have made my amends with those I hurt through my addiction but the true pain of regret will never really fade. Alcoholism is an awful disease. It takes so much strength to pull ourselves out to the pit of addiction.

I am a recovered alcoholic. I was a blackout drunk for 25 years. A breast cancer diagnosis finally pushed me to pour everything down the sink and walk away from it. I did. I will never drink again. I never physically injured anyone other than myself during my addiction, and for that I have no words.

There have been some very bad developments today.
