Ghen War's implementation is especially hardcore:
You start with three lives.
You lose a live not only if you die, but if you leave a level or shut down the console. You can only safely leave the game when completing a level.
If you lose all your lives, your save is deleted.
I wonder how the challenge absolutist crowd feels about the brief trend of American longform games with permanent save file deletion
I love that Steed is supposed to be playing a Columbo-esque fool for this sequence but they still had Patrick Macnee belt out this heckuva of a monologue lol

Saw somebody say that Nintendo needs to give people hope that there will be a be a new Mario and Zelda.
The niche, obscure franchisesβ¦Mario and Zelda.
Yeah. Some of yall are crackheads. Addicted to news and announcements. And I am being dead serious about this.
I will never forget when Mikami-san rushed me into a side office in Osaka and showed me the controller. βPlease authorize this for Xbox.β
I did.
In praise of the final boss of Alpha Mission II / ASO II
The concept of a shmup boss that fights by summoning other things. How it keeps drawing out its arm to psyche nervous players. The gruesome head conversion and damage detail. Just a great fucking video game boss #shmup #neogeo

I need at least some proof that youβre not just performing the critic aesthetic
Turn around drawing of Vectorman, a robot made of hovering balls of various sizes. Ink on paper.
VERY old drawing I did as a guide for marketing materials for the Sega Genesis game Vectorman.
Sony bought Psygnosis because of this game

How difficult would it be to implement mouse controls in HOTD?
In the manual for Novastorm on PS1, one of the developer is credited for the role of "Fat Bloke"
Not big on making predictions but I might write about it later and βpredictingβ after the fact is obnoxious: I think 2XKO is going to underperform 1. The control scheme is weird and doesnβt fulfill the purpose of making the game βaccessibleβ 2. League is a popular game but it doesnβt have much wide appeal - itβs not Marvel. Itβs not even Capcom, in terms of exciting gamers 3. Having a bunch of fighting game community people on the team sounds smart, but is probably actually a problem That last one is a little hard to explain- you run the danger of people with a very different perspective than average players, stubborn/ peculiar ideas, and fixated on things most players donβt care about Kind of like film nerds making a movie and itβs all tracking shots, rack zooms and split diopters. (I have no idea about the monetization so by underperform I mean player metrics not dollars collected) An example of this is the emphasis on leverless controllers - 0% of average gamers own a leverless. Making the game play better on leverless at the cost of playing worse on normal controllers is something only fighting game superfans would do Sf2 HD Remix had a bunch of fighting game experts consult on it and that didnβt help the game at all. Skullgirls was made by a fighting game nerd and itβs fine but itβs very plainly MVC2 +CVS2 + panty shots, without any distinguishing features Having βexpertsβ / superfans work on a derivative game is a mixed bag, but I think itβs much more dangerous in competitive games compared to say a Metroidvania, especially a competitive game with complex systems and technical elements
When I wrote this (August '24) I had never played 2XKO - this was based entirely on the advertised features (mostly the control scheme) and who the team had hired.
This is, I dare say, dead-on, especially the part about top players fixating on peculiar features.

I understand the idea that movie critics in 1995 were too caught up in stories of Waterworld's troubled production to look at the movie fairly, but I cannot understand for the life of me not at the very least being charmed by Dennis Hopper's character and his merry band of crackheads.
so in three stories, out of 187, and they were controlled by a different guy each time. it makes the "world" seems so much bigger and exciting than if you contrive the story to be about the imperial remnant's superweapon of the day
i'm watching The Avengers (john steed's) and it's remarkable how old-scholl TV's aversion to recurring villains benefited the program. Every episode it's a new evil mastermind, double agent, master criminal. the only villain that appeared more than once (non-sapient robots) did
I think A Realm Reborn was probably a bad thing for the industry in that people still point to it and say "maybe we can pull a Real Reborn." But A Realm Reborn happened because they replaced the lead on the game, and the new lead brutally identified the existing problems and pledged to fix them.

Thought my N64 was dying, but instead it was the SD card in the everdrive. Good thing too, I don't think my worldview could handle any challenge to the notion that the Nintendo 64 is immortal
The 80's cop show Hunter was briefly revived in 2003. One telefilm and 7 episodes were filmed, only five of those episodes aired.
What *was* aired has never been rerun or released on home video and is on YouTube in what I can only describe as Awesome Quality
