Samuel: Oh, I wanted to tell you I watched the Lord of The Rings over Christmas.
*Oh?? First time?*
S: Well, I was, like, really young, too young, when I watched them the first time, so I thought I should watch them again.
*And what did you think?*
S: They were good! A little too Fiction for me, but I like the battles and stuff.
*Which movie was your favorite?*
S: Oh, well, I just watched The Two Towers and the last one.
*Really? Why didn't you watch The Fellowship of The Ring?*
S: I just remember it being kinda boring.
*Who was your favorite character?*
S: I think that guy who was really good. You know he was really strong and always protecting the hobbits and then they were afraid he was going to give the ring to the goblin guy?
*...who?*
S: He is really big and then he had a son. And he got shot with all the arrows and died.
*...Boromir?*
S: Yeah! Boromir! He was cool! Always fighting. And they made that really good meme about him.
*I think Faramir is his brother, not his son."
S: No, no Faramir wasn't related. Like, there was his dad, and then they were really mean to Faramir.
*Because he was just some guy?*
S: Yeah but he didn't deserve that. I thought that was too much.
*Did you have a least favorite character?*
S: Oh yeah I didn't like that goblin guy. What is his name?
*Gollum?*
S: Yeah, it just seemed like he was there for no reason. And he was so annoying! And the CGI is so bad.
*So are you going to read the books now?*
S: Oh yeah I heard of those. I don't know. I read all the Harry Potter books though.
*Oh? What did you think of those?*
S: I guess they were good! I mean, they are a little too Fiction for me.
*How do you mean "too Fiction"?*
S: Like, it's so Fiction! You have to be like "what's going on??" Like, they would use words and you are like "...WHAT?" [laughs] But I mean, like, you are reading it and you don't understand, so you have to, like, force yourself to understand.
*Oh, okay. So, who is your favorite character in Harry Potter?*
S: Well, Hermione is definitely the smartest! It's just like she knows everything. She was kind of the main character.
*Oh do you think the books would have been better if they were told from Hermione's perspective?*
S: Yeah! I think...I think they could have made A LOT of money!
*More than they made?*
S: Yeah like probably a million dollars. Maybe like a...billion.
*It's too bad the author is a transphobe. She's really bigoted towards trans people.*
S: Oh she hates trans people? That's bad.
*Yeah, it's really gross*
S: Oh, yeah, I might read the Game of Thrones books. Cause someone told me that they were like Lord of The Rings but like better. Have you read the Game of Thrones?
*Kind of, but I didn't really like it. If you felt like that with Harry Potter, you might feel similar with Game of Thrones and Lord of The Rings. They use a lot of silly words in those books.*
S: Yeah...oh yeah, do you remember in Lord of The Rings when the guy was like fighting the other guy and they were falling?
*Gandalf and the balrog?*
S: Yeah I thought that was pretty cool.
*What did you like about it?*
S: I guess I just liked seeing them fight with magic. I liked that.
*Wait, you mean when Gandalf and Saruman were fighting? The two wizards?*
S: Yeah! The two wizards!
*What team would you want to be on if you were in the Lord of The Rings world? Humans? Hobbits? Dwarfs?
S: Oh, I think elves.
*Elves? Why?*
S: They are just really cool. They like to stay away and they hide and I think I'm kinda like that. You know?
*Yeah, I guess I can see that...*
S: Yeah I think I would be an elf.

This is the convo from a few months later where I get him to talk about "Fictions"
It's when "you don't understand, so you have to, like, force yourself to understand."

It's tough to rec d&d because it has such a high threshold to learn that if someone has a bad experience it feels doubly bad, like "what did I do all that for?"
What I don't recommend is learning through actual plays because those are professionals and give a skewed sense of what a table is like

Fair enough! It's definitely a chonky boy!
D&D can be amazing in the right group of people or literally the worst experience ever in the wrong group of people. You don't need to be "outgoing" to have a good game in the right group.

If you liked DE and think you might like D&D, why not check out Baldur's Gate, first? There are a lot of social conventions of an RPG table, but if it's the RPG and not the Social that is intriguing to you, you might check it out. Have you played the most recent Baldur's Gate?

I really miss Samuel. He was so great to talk to but EMS was not for the darling boy. He left to work at his uncle's car rental franchise. I am so glad I documented some of his words lol
Dialogue is a particular interest of mine I love when people speak in such a Rich Text as Samuel

An interview conducted by me with my coworker, Samuel, who, up until two weeks ago had not seen any Star Wars films, and approaches them from a particular...unbiased sense of culture.
*So, Samuel, you have now seen all the Star Wars movies. What did you think?*
Samuel: It was pretty good. Yeah, I was just like: "Let me see. Let me see what the whole world is talking about." But it's all Fictions, you know?
*But you liked them, right? Cause you watched them all?*
S: Yeah, I thought, like, the story with Anakin, like, how he turned to the Dark Side was the most interesting. It was the best. I thought they should have done more like that.
*So, would you say you liked the prequel trilogy the best?*
S: Yeah, I really liked the, uh, the Revenge of The Sith. Like, I was like: "you get to see how he turned to the Dark Side!" And I thought Quigon was pretty good.
*You've mentioned before that you didn't really enjoy the original trilogy. Do you still feel the same way?*
S: Yeah, I think those are not too good. They are too slow, and the fights and effects are so bad. Like, with the light sabers, they are just going like that! (laughs) I think those old movies are only for, like, kids. They were made in the 1980's you know.
*And how do you feel about the most recent movies? With Rey and Finn and everyone?*
S: They were okay. I thought it was crazy that she was Palpatine's granddaughter. I thought that was pretty good. Yeah, I liked that.
S: They were okay. I thought it was crazy that she was Palpatine's granddaughter. I thought that was pretty good. Yeah, I liked that.
*But you would rank the prequel trilogy on the top?*
S: Okay, here's how I would rank them: Episode III, II, I, like that, the best. Episode III is the best. Then Episode IX, VIII, VII. Then the other movies, Rogue One and Han Solo. Then the old ones. I think maybe The Return of The Jedi was the better one of the old ones.
*And you watched Rogue One first of all of these. What's your impression now?*
S: It's pretty good. I thought it was cool they had the guy...what's his name? With the eye?
*I don't know.*
S: But Han Solo was really good. That movie is, like, non-stop action. Really good!
*Who was your favorite character in the whole of all the movies?*
S: I think Anakin. I thought his story was really cool.
*Did you have a favorite character from the new films?*
S: What do you mean?
*Like, Finn, Rey, Poe?*
S: Oh, definitely Han Solo. Like, I really liked the way he was in all the movies. Even in the old ones. And I really liked how the actor guy did him.
*Were there any twists or surprises that you liked? Like, where you went "Whoa! I can't believe that happened!"*
S: A twist? Oh, I thought it was so stupid how Palpatine was the bad guy the whole time. Like, they all can have the Force but they can't sense that it's Palpatine, the bad guy? I thought that was really dumb. Like, they they should be able to know!
*Any twists you liked?*
S: I guess I thought it was cool that, um, they were the split in the Force. Like, they could bring balance to the Force, Rey and him... And then she defeated Palpatine with lightning! It was a lot better than when he died in the other movie. Like, when he just fell down the thing? (Laughs) Yeah, it was better in the more recent movie.
*So, what would your overall review of the movies be? Would you recommend them to people if they asked you if they should watch?*
S: Hm. They were pretty good. But, yeah, I think only kids will like them. They aren't really that sci-fi, you know! Yeah, I think they are for kids. Like only kids will go back and watch the old movies. The fights and actions and stories are better in the new movies. But, yeah, they are all Fictions. Just Fictions.
*Oh, yeah, who was your favorite droid?*
S: Droid?
*Like, C-3PO, R2-D2, BB-8?*
S: Oh, NOT, C-3PO and R2-D2! They were so dumb and annoying! Like, all C-3PO can do is translate languages. I guess that's helpful, but I liked the little one that followed Rey.
*BB-8?*
S: Yeah, BB-8. He was really strong, you know. You could see him fighting, and when he carried the message...yeah I would want a droid I could take anywhere and have fun with. Like I don't think C-3PO and R2-D2 were very good. I would want a droid that can do everything like fight AND translate languages AND hack into the system. Yeah, BB-8 can do it all. Oh, I also liked Han Solo's droid.
*Han Solo's droid?*
S: Yeah the girl. I thought she was also pretty good. Like, she can fight. That was cool. And it was cool how she could fly a plane.
*Oh, yeah, from the Han Solo movie.*
S: Oh, yeah, I'm watching The Mandalorian now.
*Do you like it?*
S: Yeah, it's more like "adult" action.
*Do you like Baby Yoda?*
S: I have something to tell you. It's not baby Yoda, it's Grogu. I thought it was Yoda as a baby, but it actually takes place after the other movies.
*Yeah, but people call him Baby Yoda.*
S: Yeah. Oh, yeah, I wanted to ask you something...oh, yeah, it was: If you made an app, what would you want it to be?
*An app? Hm. I think I would want an app to tell me what to make for dinner. What would you want your app to be?*
S: I dunno, I was just trying to see what you thought a good app would be.
*So, you are trying to steal my idea?*
S: No! It's probably already taken. I was just trying to see if there are any ideas that aren't taken.
*So, you ARE trying to steal my idea!*
S: No, no, like, if I made the app, we could split it. I could pay you for your idea. But, like, I had an idea for a virtual tape measure. But it was already taken. That's a good idea, right?
*Yeah, it's a good idea.*
S: Yeah, but it was already taken.

Usually death after punch is associated with initial unconsciousness and then a slow bleed inside the skull from rupture of capillaries over hours or days causing obstruction and eventual death. The person may regain consciousness during this period before symptoms of a brain bleed become apparent.

I am so excited to answer questions like this! Generally that sort of insta-kill would be associated with the spinal cord, unless there was severe crush damage to the skull (like brains leaking out -- impossible to do with a bare fist)

I could be wrong but it sounds like you are saying people are reading a lot of 1POV cause a lot is there, but the way publishing works is a lot gets there because people are reading it. Why are they reading this voice, why this genre, why now, and why to the exclusion of 3rd person and 2nd person?

Like, why aren't we seeing a surge of 1st person books in other genres? Why isn't du Maurier's Rebecca, probably the coolest use of 1POV, having a moment?
It's not just the voice it's the genre + voice and I think it's worth trying to figure out culturally what's going on.

Okay, hm. I'm not sure I'm understanding what you mean by diverse here and its relationship to the market as a whole, but it still doesn't really answer the question: why now? Why the "trend"? Do we think it's early readers of Hunger Games and stuff imprinting on the 1st person voice, now adults?

hm! I see what you are saying about availability. I think why people are taking notice (and definitely the sentiment expressed in the article) is the opposite reason though. That it feels *less* diverse in voice and style, now: the people who say they won't even touch 3rd person is the example given
